You may recall I posted here about a week ago about long hiar on a balding head. Well, I decided it was time, and my friend Rick got me to commit to having my HEAD SHAVED tonight. There is something here called St. Baldricks, something about shaving your head for St. Patircks Day and raising money for cancer.
Well, Rick told me that I should donate my hair to this place called Lots of Love, which will make a wig for children who lost their hair. He told that the only condition is that at this event tonight, my head will actually be shaved clean bald.
I guess it was inevitable, but I still feel sick to my stomache. The only plus side is that 2 charities will benefit from me losing my hair. Rick showed me photos of other longhairs who got their heads shaved, and I'm amazed that guys with fuller, nicer hair than mine would willingly go bald.
Anyway, next time I post, my name will no longer be Goodwin; I guess it will be BALDwin!
Before you fall for that Locks of Love line check out some info about it that you should know (I have posted some of it on my site).
Well, I have been growing my hair (for 15 months) out for Locks of Love. But now that I've read what critiques has been said about this organization, I'm thinking maybe I should resort to another organization called Wigs for Kids, (http://www.wigsforkids.org/). Is this organization a reputable one?
Thanks a bunch
Seems almost identical to L.O.L. I think that you assume they are.
The FIRST thing their FAQ says is:
Q. Will my hair definitely be used to make a hair system?
A. We cannot guarantee that the donated hair will be used.
(Will that make you feel so great about your personal sacrifice if it isn't used for what you did it for and really ends up in someones pocket...or the trash?
L.O.L. says that they give kids under the age of 6 synthetic hair. This place doesn't say that, I wonder why one thinks fake is better for kids and the other "may" think that real is better.
W.F.K. is also listed as a non-profit organization just like L.O.L. so they also don't have to make public how they are running their business which leaves many questions unanswered.
I say that if donating is what really makes you feel good and you could care less about having long hair then go for it. But if you like your long hair and are thinking of donating because you feel you should (guilt trip) or others are pushing you to (you probably didn't know about the organization until it was brought to your attention because you have long hair), then you are just cheating yourself no other reason to "maybe" get someone else to feel like you should feel about yourself...intead of yourself.
If you want to shave your head because you are losing it anyway and it's what you want to do, then that's fine. I would check out Hair Religion's website - he has some info on "Locks of Love" and I would resist pressure to cut my hair for what appears to be a dubious cause.
I don't indulge in any stunts in the name of charity, nor do I give to those who do. If I feel strongly enough to support a charity's work, I donate. No fancy stunts. I certainly wouldn't succumb to emotional blackmail to cut my hair off.
I tried to respond to this last night, but something seems to have happened to it...
Read what Hair Religion has to say about Locks of Love (at his web site). Anyway I hope you like your new hair cut.
Locks of love is really a very good hearted and intended organization, what better use for the hair you cut than that?
However its funny that all the ones who talk you into donating your hair, have short hair, and most of them didn't have long hair, and have never had it.
Locks of love has a very big amont of unused hair because they don't have enough money to make the wigs, so all these guys that use locks of love to make you cut your hair, should leave you alone and make a donation that doesn't require hair being chopped off. Beware people.
Well, I read this bit of info on Hair Religion's page:
Locks of Love only uses about 3% of the hair donated for wigs. The rest is either sold or "disposed of".
I hate people lik that with a passion. Indeed, if they're so into helping those kids why won't they grow their hair long and shave it of? I'm sure they're employers would understand if they should enquire about their locks.
WHAT does shaving your head have to do with raisinfg money for diseases???
You might want to take a look at Hair Religion's website - he has posted info on "Locks of Love". It all sounds pretty dubious to me. Get your head shaved if that's what you want - but do it for you, no one else.
Me - never. If I feel inclined, I'll give to charity. I never indulge in stunts for them.
