Thankfully, the nation's current transfixation with personal goings-on in the White House hasn't affected this board. So, in a gentle, nonthreating, and humorous light, I thought I'd post the following URL I ran across while looking for pictures of long hair styles. Enjoy.
To entice you to read the link, here is the first paragraph of the article:
Many men today are wearing their hair long. This style seems to have had its start in modern times by certain musical groups such as the Beatles and others. The hippie movement, which has spread like a plague, has adopted the Long hair style for men. The "Jesus freaks" and other religious hippie cults have taken the long hair road. Unfortunately many men and boys who are not hippies have started to wear their hair in this manner. Many try to justify long hair by stating that Jesus Christ wore long hair. The time has come to set the record straight.
Amen to that!
Anyway, I read the info. As to what Mr. Bynum is alluding to (meaning that for shame men are growing their hair long.
He writes: The Bible clearly indicates that the hair style of a man should be short, and that the woman's hair should be long. But he did not list any supporting scripture which says just this and the ones he listed supporting other arguments I found to be somewhat vague.
He further writes: Other than the very few Nazarites mentioned in the Old Testament, we can think of only one long haired man in the Bible and that was Absalom. He was the wicked rebellious son of David.
What about Samson? And if he is trying to prove that a long haired man is most likely to be wicked, well, Clinton has short hair. Hmmm.
Its a pity that a man has to waste a great deal of his time and Internet space ranting and raving about a man's hair which I believe God would not bother about in the course of judging a man for the size of his heart. Nevertheless, I had a good laugh.
Chaeya
Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
St.Luke 23:34
Bless this poor man's heart. . .he hasn't a clue. I agree with Chayae and JC in this one. First Samuel 16:7 says "For God sees not as man sees, for man may look at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart."
Personally, I would much rather please my heavenly Father, not some Baptist preacher. . . I can say this because I graduated from a BAPTIST seminary with TWO masters degrees. . .and am a very proud long hair! I have certainly heard all these arguements before. I personally think Christ simply doesn't care about the length of anyone's hair. . .He is much more concerned about their soul.
The Bible also contains warnings about wearing garments of mixed fibers and that we should greet one another with a holy kiss. I don't see these things being such a problem today. When was the last time anyone greeted me with a "Hey, how ya' doin?" and a kiss? Many garments of today are made out of wool/polyester combinations. . .including pastor's suits. What Mr. Bynum has done here is to take HIS message out of context. . .he has removed it from it's surrounding and tried to apply it to today's culture. Those verses he makes reference to were written to a partiular group of people at a particular time in history. Not that scripture has no relevance today. . .to me, it is extremely relevant. But you have to know how to look at it from an educated viewpoint.
Please don't think that all Baptists are like this man. . .nor did all of us support the "Baptist Boycott." Please. I was a seminary student when all that happened and didn't know of ONE student who was actually in favor of it.
If long hair is such an "evil" then at what point does it "become" evil? At what length? When does it go from being "acceptable in God's sight" to "shameful, vile and associated with the Sodomites and homosexuals?" Find me the scripture to support that!
Mark
Yeah, Mark, and what of all the poor men, created in God's image, who had long hair just as God made them, who went to Hell because they had the misfortune of having lived before mankind invented scissors?
The Bible may say nothing of Jesus's hair length, but by knowing how men are made, we know God has long hair:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of
God created he him - it's in Genesis 1:27!

Samson was a Nazarite.
I think if you look around, you would see that women are just as guilty of breaking God's command. A lot of women are wearing their hair shorter than most men wear theirs, if not shorter. So where is the line of demarcation of what the length of hair should be? Is 6 inches to long for and man or is 3 inches to short for a woman? I think women are taking advantage of their innate freedom to get away with what they can, and men suffer by being restricted to, "SOCIETIES NORMS". I feel if women have the right to wear their hair short, then men ought to have the same right to wear their hair long.

I agree with the your post that shows other ways the Bible can be interpreted.
Bible is subject to interpretation. Interpretation is further complicated by the fact that the Bible has been converted to English. The meaning of words and the way they are used changes over time. The Bible itself says it's incomplete; the missing information can change the way statements can be interpreted.
And some parts was changed by the churches for improving their might and wealth!

Are the styles of the Roman Emperors normative for Baptists? Why don't you wear togas. Do you have gergitoriums in your churches? Do you approve of gladitorial contests? If not, how do you differentiate yourself from the Roman Empire?
I'll assume here that when you say "you," you're referring to the author of the article, not to me. I am a longhair who believes that the author's opinions are patently wrong. I posted the URL for the members of this board to respond with their thoughts and because, frankly, the article is funny in a sad, tragic way.

Dear Steve,
Yes, I am referring to the Baptist Preacher who seems to identify Christianity with the Roman Empire, not you. I am greatful to you for bringing this nonsense to my attention.
Sometimes ago there was a post on some list that had a more historically informed discussion of long hair in the Bible. I attempted to download it and lost part of it. If anyone knows about that research I would like to have it.
My experience is that Christian Fundamentalist go to colleges run by themselves and uncontaminated by any sort of historical point of view -- sort of a pooling of ignorance.
Thanks
Jim
