Awkward stage right now, 5 months growing with 1 trim. Should i cut the back so it can be even with the sides and top. I mean i will have to do it later on anyway. (This is a repost, only got 1 reply, looking for more opinions)
In the early stages uneven hair growth is very apparent. For what it is worth, it does get much less noticable as the hair gets longer. I'm closing in on ten months of growth and my uneven hair is no longer an issue. Not knowing this I had a maintenance trim at the three month mark and in retrospect I would advise against it. I'll admit my hair looked good for about a week. The cost was the loss of weeks of growth. A few weeks after the trim my hair started to look "uneven" again. I now realise that the only way to keep growing hair even is to keep it trimmed and thus stop it from growing. I my opinion if you want long hair in some reasonable timeframe the best course is to let the hair grow and put up with some unevenness. As I said, after many months the unevenness will not be readily apparent.
Would just cutting the back have the same affect? Only thing i am trying to do is keep the back trimmed till my top and sides get the same length as the back. Last time i got a trim it didn't make me too happy cause they trimmed all over but this time i am thinking just the back.
My instructions to the haircutter before my disasterous trim were essentially "I'm growing my hair long, just clean up the back". This lady went on to cut about six weeks of growth off the SIDES. Her "trim" set my hair up to grow back to exactly the same unevenness I had come in to fix. If you manage to find a haircutter who will listen and will ONLY trim the back it would certainly make your hair look "better" (more even) at the expense of a longer awkward stage.
It is easy for me to be against maintenance trims since I am lucky enough to be able to go through my "wild-man" hair phase without corporate or family interference. I do understand that some people need a more "corporate" look for various reasons and therefore have to get trims. If you do get a trim be sure to watch the haircutter in the mirror! Finally, I think the awkward stage is rough no matter what you do. Long hair is the reward for patience.
I know that my bangs grow faster than the back, so in time my bangs will catch up with the rest of my hair.
I would just wait it out, but as someone else said, the final decision is up to you.
