I know you all hate undercuts (I don't see why they're so bad but whatever) but:
If I were to get an undercut now and then just continue to let my hair grow (not keep cutting the undercut area), what would it look like? Would it be noticeabley crap? I ask because the hair at the back of my neck it all scraggly and itches my neck. I'm not talking about a huge undercut, just a few inches. Thanks.
I can garuantee you that you will end up hating it and wishing you had left it alone. Patience is the key here. Growing your hair long comes with a lot of irritations and bothersome stages. It's when you finally achieve long hair that is all around below the shoulders that the crap really stops. That's how I see it anyway. Take advise from someone who has made this very mistake and leave your hair alone. Let nature take its course and then you are garuanteed to be satisfied in the long run. Good Luck in what ever you do, but this is my advise to you, my friend. Peace!
admittedly i am not a fan of the extreme undercuts, but i'm afraid i disagree with everyone here....i have seen undercuts where only the back inch or so is done and i think it looks great. much better to "clean that up" and have it look neat than have a scraggly neckline.

You don't disagree with everyone, but you are definitly a member of a
very small minority. But we should all do what we think works best
for ourselves.
I may be mistaken, but I didn't think that shaving the scraggly neck hairs that grow away from your natural hairline was considered an undercut. At least I don't consider that an undercut. I just think that makes it look neater when you have your hair tied back in a pony-tail.
My opinion.
This is an undercut.
This isn't an undercut. Only the long shaggy hairs that grow off of the natural hairline are shaved to neaten things up.
And this is what I would consider an extreme undercut.
That's one of my pics showing a cleaned up neck (not anything even nearing an undercut). Those neck hairs do not match the growth of the rest of the hair and cause me to look "scruffy" if not kept in a trimmed state. I have another pic not on my site that shows this well. If you have long hair and ever tie it back you will begin to notice this neck hair and wonder what it would look like if you trimmed it...when you finally get it trimmed you will wonder what took you so long and will want to keep it that way.
This same type of maintence is also applied to beards (& goatees) when one wants a neat and clean appearance.
It's not difficult to keep up as you can get it done when you have your regular maintainence trims on your hair.
That one pic is more or less an extremely long mohawk.
What pic? I know that you aren't talking about one of mine.
Early in my hair growth I shaved my neck up to the natural hairline to get rid of the scraggly hairs. At some point my hair got long enought to cover my neck and the scragglyness is now completely hidden. Once I became accustomed to having hair touching the back of my neck it stopped itching. I've seen guys with ponytails who had an undercut on the bottom inch of the back and in my opinion it looked pecular.
