I frequently see notes on this board from guys wondering how they can grow their hair faster. Maybe this is a way to do it. Maybe not.
At the Hair Boutique site (under "Ask Karen"), Karen mentions a picture and article in Cosmopolitan magazine (not exactly JAMA!) showing a "supermodel" who increased her hair growth to 1 ½ inches per month using a European developed pill called Viviscal. It is classified as a "food supplement" with allegedly positive effects on hair health.
The manufacturers site (http://www.viviscal.com/home.htm) has a lot of information and testimonials. Viviscal seems intended to correct hair loss problems. Its available in internal and topical forms. The bad news is it costs $78/month. Youd have to be in a pretty big hurry to grow out your hair. Still, at an 1 ½ inches per month, you could grow out your buzz cut to shoulder-length in 8 months and sport a long pony-tail inside a year.
So, has anybody tried this stuff? Would you? Heck, I might sometime.
I have not seen that article in Cosmopolitan. I would be more confident if I saw positive comments at sites such as regrowth.com or others specifically targeting baldness or alopecia in a generic sort of way. The viviscal site is interesting, but I don't see any independent studies to confirm their claims, so while I'm open minded, I remain skeptical.
The product appears to be derived from fish oil and may be similar to minoxidil (I've seen that claim but no basis for the claim). Interestingly, even in the study sited by the viviscal producers, several people in the study withdrew from the study because of a lack of positive results.
Victor, there was such an article in an issue of Cosmopolitan. Alas, I have no issues that go back that far in the past, for I believe it was at least a year or two ago that the article was printed. You can always visit the library; they have ways to search out magazine articles. It was a very small piece done on a model who was not satisfied with the buzz cut she had donned, and at the time the pill wasa not available in the US - if that helps timewise. Best of luck.
