I love long hair; I am a medical doctor with shoulder lenght hair; I would like grow it more but I am afraid that my patients don't accept my long hair; please give me an opinion
Hey there my friend,
It's a good thing that you had the chance to grow your hair long inspite your in the medical field. Is there any haircut rules in working at hospitals or at clinics? Please tell me. To make your hair neat, always tie it back. Maybe put some gel to enhance more its neatness before tying. Your patients will accept you as long as you're neat looking and most importantly perform your duties efficiently. Who knows, a patient may say that you're a unique doctor. By the way, what do you specialize in and where do you work?
Nel
I understand your concern. I am a clinical psychologist: though in private practice, do lots of consultation in hospitals and silled nursing facilities. It is a non-issue. I often get positive comments. The only negative is a 78 year old poorly educated farmer in a nursing home who has bonded with me soley based on my supporting his teasing me about by beard and hair! Now he doesn't mention my ideosyncracies, but tells me how he's dealing with his peripheral neuropathy and whether he will have to have amputations.
Jim
So do you perform hair amputations?
Well, I know I LOVE long hair, and if I could find a doctor with long hair, I'd go to him with every headache and splinter I had! :)
Joe: I am a family physician who had the same hangups about growing long hair despite my love for it throughout my life. About two years ago, I decided to let it grow- it is now just below the shoulders- I keep it very neat and have not had a negative comment for about a year now- it is a non issue! In fact, I find more men are able to talk to me about hair loss and have been prescribing Rogaine and Propecia- to the point I should be a poster child for the companies! My advice- you have to look at yourself in the mirror every day- do what makes you happy- the hell with everyone else- they don't have your interests in mind- only you do. Just keep in mind that sanitary rules still apply- I would not let it fly all over the place- either tie it down or use a gel or spray to control it's movement while you are at work. JL
I wish more medical doctors had long hair. If you decide to let it get longer, it is easier to manage when it is long enough to tie back into a ponytail.
I totally support you in growing your hair out. How good a doctor you are has nothing to do with the length of your hair. I would respect any doctor that is professional and has a great bed side manner.
I would suggest that you take good care of your hair and feel comfortable with the way you look. I am 28yrs old and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in January 1998. You can not tell by looking at me--but some of the side effects can suck sometimes. I don't care how long my doctor's hair is--what nationality, color or religion they are. If they are a good doctor that I can trust and respect--that is all that matters to me. Keep making good relationships with your patients and they will keep coming back. If you are that worried--put your hair in a ponytail at work to pull it off of your face--I bet a lot of people would not even notice for a bit. I wish you luck in your career and be the best doctor you can be. Good luck, Jeannie
You must live for your own happiness, long hair kept neat in a ponytail at work should not upset anyone. other peoples opinions about your
hair are as irrelevant as their opinions about your choice of eyeglasses or what color clothes you wear; it is none of their concern.
Just because we are professionals does not mean we have to conform to any standard of appearance. If you get flack at work, change jobs, you don't want to work with narrow minded jerks
anyway! I am a tv and vcr repairman and it has not affected my practice to have long hair and the only comments I get are compliments. Also since growing my hair out I get a lot more dates.
(with other gay guys) and if you are straight...women love longhair!
When I choose a doctor, my principal concern is whether her or she is competent and can think scientifically.
As a long-haired male, I think it'd be neat if a male physician were long-haired. There are certainly far more important criteria in choosing a doctor than appearance!
Dont worry about your long hair and your profession. I dated an Orthopod for 10 yrs and it didnt effect his practice one bit!!!!. His hair was shoulder length also.
The minister who performed our wedding ceremony has a pony tail---his hair went over very well with my guests. Everyone commented that they thought he was "cool."
Let the hair grow!!!
I'm a 3rd year (junior) medical student with hair a bit shorter than my shoulders. I get comments ranging from "Well, it's about time we got some non-conservative docs around here" to "cut that shit, skippy" Some come from doctors, others nurses, but so far, the patients don't mind. I start surgery in three days, and I expect the negative comments to increase. From reading this, I guess I should go learn how to tie it back.
Even more than my professional life, though, I care about the effects of my hair on my social life. Maybe that's good, maybe that's bad, but I've noticed that I don't attract more women, I attract different women.
So far, I like them, and I'm gonna keep the hair.
