Hello all
Question:
My hair is thick, really THICK, wavy and frizzy. Right now the front is about 6 inches and it has been growing for 10 months.
The problem: when dry my hair is BIG, like an afro literally and it does not hang down...
Will a pony tail ever be possible? When my hair has dried it sticks up like a wavy lines... all 6 inches of it! Right now it is the middle of summer and I have thought about cutting it because it does not seem like it will end up being like what I imagined unless I always wet my hair or use half a tube of gel.
Any advice?
(when I gel my hair -Loreal melting gel- it is similar to Dan's who has the web site with the progress pics, otherwise it sticks up)
Give it time, Mike! 10 months is smack dab in the middle of the awkward phase. By November or December you'll be pimpin'. Try a heavier leave in conditioner, like Paul Mitchell's "the Conditioner", and possibly a gel or curl control cream. I'm sure there are hair care pros here that can better reccommend products for you (namely Bruce). If you can' stand looking at it, Bandanna it, cap it, whatever you have to do...just wait it out. It's worth it.
Check me out at the stage I believe you're at...

I know how you feel with the poofy hair thing. Im at 10 months from a buzz. and let me tell you, my hair is wildly out of control. I myself have questioned whether I too, am fit to have long hair. I mean, its HUGE! But I think somethings been happening lately, its....deflating....or compacting itself. Its like, it got so big and now its trying to cave in on itself. Something good may be happening fellas. I contemplate cutting my hair all the time, but man, you just gotta stick with it. If i cut it now, i know i will never try again. I have curly, thick, outta control hair, just keep that gel bottle in your right hand, and a hat in your left.
People, I have the exact same problem but being 1/4 Liberian I guess I should expect my hair to be really thick, corkscrew curly and her-uge! I'm toughing the awkward stage out for the THIRD year in a row 'cause I always get disheartened and cut it at around the 12 month mark. Don't make my mistake. If I had left it be, I'd have great hair right now..Stand together afro-dudes!
wow, 10 months seems like the time when big hairs reach some sort of critical mass ;)
i have real big hair, and at 10-11 months, they're finally starting to settle down at times. (rest of the time, i just wear a cap or a beanie to be at least a _little_ decently looking :)
don't despair man, i've met a lot of people that had a, let's say, MASSIVE awkward stage, and now their hair look pretty good, and not big at all. you just have to have a little determination. why look that bad for 10 months just to cut it? that would be pointless ;)

...instead of loading your entire head of hair with gel or conditioners--an expensive waste of quality product--try arranging your damp/wet hair (combing or however)the way you want it and then applying a small amount (a relative term--might take experimentation) of gel/conditioner/etc. to your palms and smooth it over the top/outside of your hair. As your hair dries, a level of containment (your choice as to how much) will be achieved--and you will not have wasted a lot of product.
Hope this is of some help, Mike...just don't give up now--you know from Dan's experience the awkward phase can be survived! His hair is awesome--and yours will be, too.
Hi Mike, I have exactly the same question and problem as you.!
My hair even frightens me sometimes when i look in the mirror first thing in the morning.!!
Stuck up and out, defying the laws of gravity is the best i can describe it.
I'm at the 6 months stage now and was hoping that in 4 months my hair would start behaving, but thats where your at and still getting no joy :((
Like you i'm starting to get disheartened thinking that my hair just isn't the type that should be grown long. I've seen and heard other people here talking about fizzyness and poofing outness, but to be honest i havn't seen anything close to my hair.!! I've not posted any pictures because of this, don't get me wrong my hair is healthy and growing well, but damn growing up and out.!!
Have you posted any pics Mike, i would be very interested in seeing if your hair is like mine..
Cheers,
Grale. :¬)
I was attempting to make a joke with that line, but I forgot this forum uses HTML coding, and my (snicker) text emote didn't show up when I surrounded it with carrots.
I meant no offense.
If you have any courage at all...NOW is the time to use it!
[We are here to ENCOURAGE guys through their Awkward Phase(s)...
but no one should feel badly if they should decide that long hair is
not for them.]
I know how you feel... I remember waking up in the morning--or during the night--and
seeing my hair looking as if it had exploded!
Some have it easier than others; for some it is sheer HELL and there
is no other word for it...
Summertime...summertime...the worst time of ALL...
WHAT can I say? Not much except that...
we are here for you and...
Good Luck!
Try wearing a fishing hat (It looks like a Gilligans hat). They make them out of cool material these days and usually have a string attached to them. They look good on me and it could help you get through the summer. By September you will have grown another 1.5 inches of hair. People have mentioned bandannas and other head covers. If it is the work environement you are concerned with, after you shower in the morning, wrap a bandanna or other cover over your head and let it dry under there. Your hair will be more straighter using this technique.
Thanks to all for the encouregement... I know I will stick it out cause I don't think my hair will get bigger than this now, hopefully it will grow "down" from now on. I do like my hair long and I am going to go for it, even if it is less "practical"...
My hair is so big and uncontrolable that a hat doesn't fit ... only bandanas work but once I take it off its afro-man in 5 minutes... Oh well...
I will try and get a picture posted...
