my wife dislikes my long hair and basically I have to wear

if so, then expecting your husband to grow his out would be like asking us longhairs to cut ours. ask him (only once) if he would consider growing it back- if he refuses, consider it a dead issue.

Presuming your husband is a good man and loving to you in every way, you must tell him how much you love him and how much his long hair makes you proud of him as a distinctive man who does not have to conform to conventional expectations. Point out to him long haired men you admire.
If he is not good to you, leave him.
