In a vast majority of cases - if you look good with long hair, you'll look even better with short hair. The opposite is true - if you look bad with short hair, don't think that long hair will change that. It's all about facial features. That's my opinion only.
You point being...?
No point intended - simply sharing an observation.
Welcome to the minority.
I think it's true that someone will look handsome or ugly irrespective of their hairstyle. I don't buy into the idea that a particular length will always look better, though. I think crewcuts almost always look awful, but that's just me, I'm sure some people like them. OTOH, 'normal' length short hair looks OK to me, I just prefer mine long.
What generally does look scruffy in long hair is when it is growing out and it's obviously just a short hair style that hasn't been cut. Women know this, and have it styled accordingly. Guys, OTOH, tend to see the alternatives as being either a conformist short hairstyle or no haircut ever! This is partly because we don't trust barbers. We also don't tend to look after our appearance as much as the ladies do, and long hair needs more looking after.
In a vast majority of cases - if you look good with long hair, you'll look even better with short hair. The opposite is true - if you look bad with short hair, don't think that long hair will change that. It's all about facial features. That's my opinion only.
I've brought this point up before and i've faced
antagonism from a lot of the members of this board...
but women, and that's who i assume most of us are trying to
impress, agree with this point.
It is ALL about facial features...
That's only because the people who frequent this place have transcended popular culture, and are doing what they want to do. In a world where fashion trends are dictated by corporations, and fads come and go, there is one thing that remains timeless:
Sense of Self
You have got to be happy with who you are, and what you look like. There can be no exceptions. There is absolutely no room for concern about how others see you when exploring one's individuality. Erego, whether people look better with short or long hair is a moot point. While people are entitled to their opinions, sharing such observations, on forums such as this, is a waste of time.
Believe me when I tell you that most men who grow there hair are not doing so to impress women. It's all about exploring self. I remember when I started growing my hair out, women were the last thing on my mind. I was doing something that I enjoyed, and that's all that mattered. To hell with anyone who didn't like it, or didn't think I looked good. I was focusing only on myself, and I never felt happier.
The same holds true in everything you do, whether it be growing your hair, getting a tatoo, whatever... if it makes you happy, nothing else matters.
I'd like to retract this statement.
Again - I'm not trying to offend anyone. I agree - do whatever makes you happy.
None taken.
You have got to be happy with who you are, and what you look like. There can be no exceptions. There is absolutely no room for concern about how others see you when exploring one's individuality
If that is so, why do people bother requesting others' opinions about how their hair looks, posting pictures and such? And why do we get the usual posts from people asking how to make their hair look like that of a certain celebrity?
I think you're mistaken here, because a great majority (read: not everyone) of the visitors to the board are superficial and are not concerned with individuality, but rather, becoming cookie-cutter versions of what they see on television or film.
So..?
people that grow hair for those reasons are a bit dumb, and they deserve to be "less nice" with longer hair, if what you tell us is true! why should we care?
(personally, that was the further thing from my mind when i decided to grow my hair. it's mostly to 1) see what it looks like, have it done once in my life 2) see if i can manage it 3) see if i can, say, weaken my ego, my accepting to wear something so horrible (my awkward stage). point 3 is where it gets a bit more spiritual, so i'll let it there.)
Oh, and by "less nice", i meant "uglier". it was too early in the morning to write in english :)

going through the pics page I don't see one person who looks like anyone on television or film.
The men here are trying to grow, or have grown, long hair. Some post pics as inspiration, others to show a particular problem they're having (giving a pic is MUCH easier than trying to describe in words), still others to document where they are (which also serves as inspiration to others just starting the long hair journey), some because they are proud of their hair (which they have every right to be).
Most people ARE concerned about what others think of their "look." It's human nature. It isn't just women, men, short hair, long hair.
I think men with short hair styles are MUCH more concerned with what people think than those with long hair. That's why they conform to what is deemed "the correct length for a man."
My experience has demonstrated that such individuals are growing their hair for the first time, and are simply very skiddish about the process. Once they become more accustomed to their hair, the need for outside reinforcement of how they look may settle down.
That could be...
When I first started growing my hair, I had no real goal. I was simply growing it. Then, Terminator 2 came out, and I found a role-model in Ed Furlong. I wanted his hair. I quickly learned that getting my hair to look like identical to his, both in appearance and volume, was an impossible task. At that point, I realized just how individualized hair is, and what an expression of self it displays.
I then set a new goal for shoulder-length hair, and have been growing it ever since.
Perhaps the same may hold true for the people, here, who are trying to look like their favorite celebrites, however, it's not for the rest of us to judge. All we can do is offer advice to those who ask for it.
AMEN...AMEN...AMEN... Good Lucks, etc. etc.!
NOT TRUE!!!! I'm not trying to impress women with long hair. I'm being to be myself. BTW, are women with short hair trying to impress men?
B. S. !!! It's about FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. You know, the guaranteed right we have in this free???? country of ours (Which many members of the Talaban in this this country are trying to take those rights away). I'm FREE to be ME (with long hair). Get a life.
You must be a Sinnead O'Connor fan.
I was referring to males. I love women with long hair. Hair is actually the very first thing I notice.
Except I love men with long hair, as do many women!
This statement has been worked over pretty good, but I just had to say something about the outlandish and unsubstantiated claims you're making. Your first claim that your observations are regarding the "vast majority of cases" begs the questions, How long have you been doing your research? And, In what peer-reviewed journal are you going to publish your findings? OK, that's a bit facetious, but you really can't be going around saying things like "vast majority of cases" if you haven't been seriously observing men all over the country.
Also, your point that if a guy doesn't look good with short hair then he's not going to look any better with long hair, and that it's all about facial features leaves a lot of guys out there with no choice but to undergo cosmetic surgery. Now, how realistic is that?
Most long haired men who are serious about their look really don't care if they look "good" or not. It's all about being true to yourself. I love my hair, even though it's only about shoulder length now, but it will get longer and I'll love it even more! It's just... me!
Dude, I know some people who have long hair don't look good with it, but where do you get off using the word "vast". All you gotta do is look at your t.v. Look at Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, etc. Have you seen Antonio Banderas with short hair? I saw him on the Tonight Show, makes him look really old and doesn't look very good with the short hair. He always had pretty cool looking long hair too. Also, crewcuts are comfortable, but if you want to talk about people not looking their best, most people with crewcuts dont. It's too short, acually, most people look really bad with them. Some peoples heads are shaped funny, or makes their face look too round, etc.
Erm, I don't get it.
