I'm almost at 3 years without cutting and I like the length (well over a foot). I'm wonderin, though, if I should cut the short hairs above my ears. I've never cut em but they're about an inch and they curl up-did they reach their terminal length a long time ago? Should I cut em?

LEAVE IT ALONE!!! DO NOT CUT A SINGLE HAIR!!! The only way to long hair is to not cut the hair.
That's what I've done for 3 yrs....haven't cut a single hair. I think the thing bout my beard hairs being above my ears is correct (I measured the growth rate of my beard and it's the same as the hair above my ears-when it grows-or 1/2 inch every 2 months). However, if the hair on the side of my hair consistently grew 1/2 inch every 2 months I would have around 9 inches by now. I only have 1-2 inches, so it musta stopped or slowed down. I'm not sure which. So, I was hoping to get input from somebody who hasn't cut their hair for 5 years. I tend towards not cutting, BTW, John!

You must know by now that those tiny hairs will never grow much longer
than they are already.
I have a feeling that Nature considers those hairs as (in some strange way) a part of your BEARD!
iT'S ONLY NATURAL THAT THE HAIRS immediately AROUND the ears would
stay short...
just like the side taps area.
I waited 18 months for those little hairs to grow and they
were just stubborn little bast*ards that never did make any progress.
Anyway, that's my input...
(after 3 years without cutting your hair must be longer than just one foot!)
Good Luck!

I clean-shave those little bastards every few weeks..
it gives a cleaner look... and I get fewer complaints
about the length of my hair....
