I have been growing my hair ever since I got out of high school. Yesterday was my first trim since then. The back was uneven, and there were too many split and thinning ends and I have to say I like it much more since the trim. So if anyone is worried about losing length due to trimming, don't be. I had three inches taken off and it looks 10x better.
After 4 years I wouldn't wouldn't have a problem with loosing some length to tidy up. In fact, when my hair gets just below shoulder length I will have it straightned out then. Peace!
I actually recommend having it straightened out now, just getting it over with. That's how I did mine, and you can see a pic of me on a message about a week old on these forums.
