Hi guys!
I love this message board... everyone here is so danged supportive!
Anyway, a few of you might have wanted to know exactly why I cut my hair a couple months ago. Well, I was so close to having my hair back in a ponytail, but everyday Id get a comment from someone criticising my hair. Everyday a comment. ANyway, it finally got to me. SO...snip. The next day he sees me and says "Hey, I was only joking!" Let that be a lesson!!!!!!! I have to admit, tho, I liked my hair short. But I just really miss knowing I was going to have long hair.
So Im growin out again... from a butch. I'll be graduating college Dec. 1999, so Ive got about a year until I have to look for a job in my scraggily hair phase. Luckily Product Designers are usually pretty liberal people, so I shouldnt have too hard of a time getting a job. Still, I cant help but think how long it would be now... about 10 inches! sigh :(
well, Im here again!

if you cut your hair because someone criticizes your length you're doing it for the wrong reason. people tend to be very liberal with their advice. if you intend to follow through with growing your hair, you need to deal with the fact that there will always be someone out there who is going to express disapproval. you need to be confident enough in your own decision that it doesn't matter what someone else thinks. if i let the criticism of others get to me my hair wouldn't be 3" from waist length.
there's nothing wrong with liking short hair- if you cut it be sure it's for that reason- freedom not only means you can grow you hair- it also means others are allowed to be critical of it. can you gut out the remarks without argument? if you let comments get to you, more comments will come. how much power over your life do you want to hand over to someone else? hang out with other longhairs and you'll hear fewer snide remarks about you growing yours.
good luck
john
Dear Jason,
Glad to hear that you're following your own good advice. That's one thing that makes long hair so special...it's not easy to come by; when you finally achieve this goal, you know you've worked hard for it.
Your own success should be doubly rewarding, because you were so close, but finally gave in to the jealousy-motivated or ignorance-based remarks which we all know so well.
Best of luck to you in all that you choose to do.
Tina
