I have quite wavy hair and especially when it has reached the length it is now (6+ inches) it looks a mess in the morning.
The only way I can get it to look tamed is to apply product, either gel or mousse, to my damp hair and then comb in back. I like how it looks after it dries and hardens. I can then comb it out and it's under control. BUT, that is usually several hours later. In the meantime, it's looks rather severe all slicked back. I wish there was some way it could look like I want right from the beginning of each day.
I was wondering if I applied the product at night after showering and combed it back then, if it would look alright in the morning. The only bad thing is that I would have to go to be with all that gunk in my hair.
So for any in the awkward stage, how do you handle your hair in the morning? I suppose I could blow dry my hair but I don't really have the time or inclination to want to do that plus it's not good for one's hair.
It will NOT work if you put the gel in at night.. .yikes!
You say it looks 'too severe' when you apply the gel to damp hair and
'slick it back.'
Well, do you have to slick it back so tightly?
I apply the gel (to damp hair), and then I comb (wide-tooth comb)off
to each side (from the part) and then comb the rest toward the back.
Let it dry this way and DO NOT comb it out.
Combing out thick hair can make it much worse. Leave it alone as
much as possible. Use a well hidden hair pin on each side in the exact
place where it will do you the most good.
Apply a spray gel as needed...here and there...
And TRUST me...your NEXT THREE INCHES...
WILL make a world of difference...
Good Luck!
wavey hair is great. at first i hated it and i hate dealing with it but women simply LOVE it. i havent met a single women who didnt love my hair and just want to play with it. not that has anything to do with it in the morning.. i tend not to put gunk in mine.. when it was at around 6 inchs i found it stuck in directions really easily so use water and let it dry out.. but personally i like the uncontrolled messy look that wavey hair gives.. theres no point trying to control it because it doesnt want to be. thats what straight hair is for..
If I was just at home, I'd let it go but I have to have some semblance of order to it at work.
You left me somewhat puzzled. Your hair is somewhat wavy but you make it sound as if your hair is extremely hard to handle. When I saw your pics I had to wonder: "Is this guy exagerating a little bit?" With your type of hair you wouldn't even have to go through an awkward phase and all that trouble to make it look ok! I'd say the one thing you'd have to do in the morning is use some water and a wide tooth comb to neaten it up a little. Add some mousse afterwards and presto! My hair is MUCH harder to handle, with lots of curls and that's what I do in the morning, minus the comb - I use my fingers instead. Keep it simple.
With Hair as shown in your web site, you get no sympathy from me. Looks like it looks good regardless.
DRUID
seeing on the website is hair that in general is looking the way I want it to. That is not how it looks in the morning and thus my dilemma.
Then why not accellerate the natural drying process you say takes several hours on its own...
If you can find one, try using a hair dryer that has a cap and a hose attached to a blower. It's not like a handheld blow dryer; you won't have a high velocity stream of air hitting your hair, but the airflow is slower, more natural, and best of all, gentle on your hair. You should be able to achieve the look of natural drying in a relatively short period of time.
I don't use any 'product' for my hair, so my answer most likely isn't as informed as some of the others you've received, but wouldn't applying product before going to bed mean that your pillow and/or sleeping quarters would soon smell of hair care? After all, you do need to put your head somewhere while you sleep and the product does its job...
based on your web pgs, I think you are exaggerating the problem. It seems like you are way too fussy about your hair, always cutting, growing, dying, combing, slicking, or gelling it. You are so conscious about it, I think it's making you see problems where none exists. just let it grow out as before or cut it to the scalp again.
I think you're going to find, especially with your current length, that there's no way around the drying time. So, my suggestion (and I don't have a LOT of practical experience with this because I'm just now getting to that length myself) is to stick with what you're doing, but don't use a brush or whatever to mat it down, use a wide tooth brush or something so it looks less severe. Also perhaps use a softer-hold product and then maybe spritz a spray gel or something over to hold any loose hairs. That way it doesn't look as severe because it's not glued to your head, but it still dries straightened out. And yes, it might feel like a helmet for a few hours until you can brush it out after it's dry, but unfortunately, there aren't many other options, and you have such great looking hair it'd be a shame to give up on it at this point. The only other thing I can offer is that it WILL eventually wave less. I don't know why. Maybe the weight of the hair. But my hair has just started to sit more nicely (finally) and I notice the wave is less of a problem now.
Hope this helps!
I just looked at the new pictures on you web site--your hair is looking very nice. I think the blond highlights are good. Hang in there until you get past the awkward stage.....
