Is anyone growing them or planning on sporting them sometime in the future?
Personally, I want to do so sometime in the next 6 mo - 2 yrs... I have the urge now, but not the length..
To hell with fancy shampoos, conditioners, combs, and brushes
What is your length?
Until today, and a trip into the large city 30 miles away from the small town in which I live, I really never gave "Dreads" a thought. But long hair seems to be in great abundance all of a sudden I find. And Dreads? There were many to be seen............and they looked great! I talked to two people about them and how "they" did it. Well, it just so happens they "didn't" do it themselves, but chose to bite-the-bullet and have it professionally done.......a process taking-up much of a whole day. I will have to admit when done "right," it is awesume! Apparently the hair doesn't have to be all that long to get it started I learned..........like only about 5" or so. It is a look that if done right is exquisite beyond belief! And, apparently the hair growing out automatically "dreads-itself" because of what is ahead of it. I almost think if what I saw today you saw also, you might be running to have it done..........no thinking required. But, to try and do it yourself or have a so-called "expert" friend do it for you verses a professional salon makes the differences between night and day. Good Luck. (Kinda hard to get out of your head once you have seen a magnificent one.) And the ones 1/2 way down the back. KILLERS!
Justin, where do you live?
did these ppl say if they had their dreads "permed" in or if they were back-combed -- or could you happen to tell by looking?
No, it COULDN'T have been permed! They talk solely about some kind of back-combing technique which took a very long time with rather small individual measured dia. sections of hair at a time.......tedious and long work. (This to give an even look to the whole rather than a dissaster.) And I guess until today, whatever I have been seeing was dissasters done "at home." That look just isn't worth wrecking your long hair up for and then having to cut it all off in the end. For with Dreads, once you have them they are there for good. A return to regular hair means a "buzz-cut!" No way around it. But, back to the subject: Then, apparently (though looking fantastic by the end of the 1st day they both claimed) ea. explained to me that it then takes about 3-4 weeks for the hair to really "set-up." That's all I know. Guess I never saw a well done "Dread" before today. It was really amazing.........and looking at it as an artist, the longer, the more fantastic. I dare say there is nothing else quite like it. OH..........sorry, I live in the Pacific NW area of the US. The city was Portland OR.

Don't want to scare you all, but my stepmom (a hairdresser) told me a gross story about a guy with dreads who came in to have them cut. She had to cut them off one at a time, and she said she could see fungus growing in the middle of them...ick. Make sure you take extra specially good care of them!
(Sorry again about the uber-grossness of that story...my head itches now!)

Yes......they DO take a certain amount of care I learned the other day. (But it is a breeze I was told.) After washing, it is of the utmost importance to see that they are dry throughout or a fungus can appear. The solution is so simple however to not let this happen. Good luck if you decide to "go-for-it!"
