im majoring in Secondary Education. Do the public schools usually have some sort of code for hair length among its male teachers? I hope they don't because I don't think I can part with my longhair. I will feel naked without it!!!
Ninja- I, too have been pursuing degrees in secondary education and public relations (in the public sector). I have had long-haired (male) teachers and know of many others (and this in conservative southeastern Wisconsin!) Due to the fact that the education profession is markedly more liberal that others, I think it would be a safe bet that long hair would be okay. That being said, if you wanted to pursue education in the private or parochial (or even charter) sector, laws that apply to civil service (public/government) jobs do not apply. Your best bet is to check with your state's (or the state you plan on teaching in) public instruction department regulations. (Which is a good idea to know if you're going into teaching, anyway.
A friend of mine is an 8th grade biology teacher in a very small town. He says he can grow his hair as long as he wants and there is nothing anyone can do about it. I believe each school district is different, depending on the contract with the teacher's union.
