Mmmm, you can get a free haircut and a trip to New York City! Now that sounds like a true prize! Although a prize that matches the $40,000 salary of their CEO sounds better, I'm sure that they could afford some of that since they are banking hundreds of thousands over their expenses and selling or discarding almost all they hair that gets donated. Heck, that would be a bargain considering that Bo Derek sold her fried-out hair back in the '80's for $1,000,000...to benefit charity.
Hmmmm, doesn't Maury tape his show in NYC?
I'm with you Jenn.
Lol you rule, dude.
Some people over at TLHS suggested a protest and call it "Sox for Love"...I bet you can guess what that entails ^_^
I've yet to hear back from Matrix regarding this, but I got an email from Locks...I can post it if anyone's interested.

I can post it if anyone's interested.
Yes, lets have it, thanks
Here we are: (my comments are bracketed)
Dear Jennifer:
Thank you for your interest in Locks of Love. It sounds like you have had a bad experience and if so, I am sorry. 60% of the hair we receive is too short or unusable [funny, considering that there is exact criteria for the length and condition of hair. Add that to Hair Religion's comment about Bo Derek's hair...if they could use THAT, they could use anything.]. Added to that, our recipients have recently been requesting long hairpieces [how long? This "Search for Rapunzel" contest would imply they want longer-than-average hair, no?]. (Two inches of the length of the hair is lost in the manufacturing process.) Our goal is to make the children feel like they did before they lost their hair. This is the best way to return their sense of self and esteem. [What about the people who lose their hair to Locks of Love, only to have it sit around useless? What about their self esteem?]
Currently, we don't have a waiting list and accept all children that meet our criteria: suffering from long term hair loss, financially disadvantaged and under the age of 18 years. We are meeting our needs as of now financially and usually for hair requests. [Usually? There's an understatement.] However, once accepted into our program, a child can reapply every 18months. (Hairpieces take 4 to 6 months to make and cost us approximately $1,000.) Therefore, every recipient has a more than a once time expense attached to them. [What does that have to do with anything?]
The bottom line is that we have to raise money to be able to make our future financial commitments. [Like paying salaries.] With all that said, please don't feel pressured to cut your hair. Whether you choose to donate is your choice just as a financial donation would be. [Well, DUH.] Our organization has never asked anyone to cut their hair and if volunteers who are trying to be helpful offended you, please know their intentions were well intended even if their methods weren't appropriate.
Hope that answers your questions,
Susan

Not all (girls only) under 18 can get real hair as they seem to be telling you. According to their website, under age 6 gets fake hair.
Hope those people cutting their hair weren't thinking their sacrifice would help girls under six....and since boys don't ever wear their hair long we need not worry about them, right?
I'm planning to write a letter to the editor of my college newspaper about this...any suggestions about what I should write? (I want to make it sound halfway intelligent ^_^). It's not going to change the world, but Locks of Love is a well-known charity that people should be able to trust...exposing them for what they really are should hopefully get people to open their eyes about things for once.

Check the archives for past posts on this topic, there is a lot of good stuff there. Check with me first but feel free to use any stuff I said if you can use it.
Can't seem to find anything in the archives about this topic...it won't let me search for "Locks of Love" for some reason. Any suggestions?
