I'm a child of the 60's. Ever since the Beatles, I've wanted to have long hair. For many reasons, I have been unable to do so. Well, now I'm doing it! After a very short haircut last June, I've let it grow. I got it trimmed last month short on the sides and top, but left it long in back (I got the top of the back trimmed a bit too). It was so wavy that it looked like hell, but the haircut made it look great. It's now down over my collar in the back and it seems to be easier to blow dry it straighter. Maybe it's the added weight. My wife gave me a lot of grief about growing my hair. "Who are you trying to be?" or "Who are you trying to impress?" were her common themes. I'm not doing it for ANYONE but ME! I'm glad I didn't listen to the negativity. I love my longer hair. It looks totally cool. I think now that it's longer in the back, I'll have a bit easier time of letting the sides grow in. I don't plan on having hair down to my (*) or anything; just long enough to look cool. I encourage any of you guys who are getting grief from people to stick it out and do what YOU want, or you'll never be happy.
Be cool.
Hey guy, I can relate to your message. I too am a child of the 60's. I graduated from high school in 1964. I remember when I first wore moe hair like the Beatles. It was quite a revolutionary step. Through the years I have have my hair down to my shoulders (the 70's), permed with a beard (the 80's), and long (the 90's). In between it has been short (ugh). Actually, this decade, I have grown my hair long three times. The first two times I cut it for a job interview (bad move, I didn't get any of the jobs). I hired at my present job with a ponytail about 6 inches long so I learned my lesson. Now, for the third time my hair is 18 inches long and growing. My wife, two sons and daughter in law don't like it, but they are accepting it. However, I think my wife realizes after 30 years that long hair is a part of who I am.
The one mistake I made this time I have grown my hair is to have the sides and top short (see "Short Sides and Top" posted 2/7/99.) Now I am growing it out and facing the bad hair stage once more. But I encourage you to do what works best for you and enjoy it. Good luck to both of us that our families will accept who we are. And be cool too!
Go for it. I too always wanted long hair, but haven't been able to due to jobs, etc. My hair is now at the bottom of my collar when dry and pretty short on the sides. I'm 41 and would love to let it grow but work where I have to wear a suit and tie everyday. I like letting it grow to its present length, but always wondered about a longer style.
I think long hair looks cool with a suit on. You could always put it in a ponytail in the back. Seems to still be fashionable and "artistic".
Go for it man, before it all turns gray.
And before you start losing length. Many guys by their mid forties find their hair's terminal length start to lessen, and if you wait you will forever miss the opportunity to see how long your hair can become.
The back of my hair is now below the bottom of my collar when dry. I usually let the back curl naturally. I like the idea of a ponytail, but am a little apprehensive. I've been keeping the sides shorter, probably 1" long. Any ideas?
Pony tails look good if they're long enough. I won't wear one till it's heavy enough to hang down and not stick out. When they're that short, they look like a fish tail or something. Sure would be easier to manage though. Mine is starting to get longer on the sides and front. It's starting to curl up by my ears and getting a bit funky sometimes. I'd like to let it grow over my ears now that the back is below my collar now. Hope I can keep it looking presentable till it's as long as I want it. People are starting to notice my hair is longer. :-)
Go for it.
