I just recently discovered this site. In a world where so few guys wear their hair long it is a great encouragement. Thank you! It is nice to know there are others in the same boat.
I have been growing my hair for three years and it is about 18 inches long. Unfortunately, I have had my hair short over my ears and on the bangs and top. Now I have decided to grow it all out. Has anyone had any experience doing this? How long is the bad hair phase? Any suggestions on how to get through this?
it'll take a couple years to grow past the bad hair phase. i used to wear my hair the same way myself. it has been over 2 years since my last trim; my bangs are to my chin & the sides are past my shoulders. the back is almost waist length.
a bandana or hat will help you through the awkward stages.
John, just wondering.
If it's been over 2 years since your last trim, why are your bangs only to your chin? Do they grow slower than the rest of your hair? Even if you started with a buzz, your hair would be approx. 12" long. Down to your chin is only about 8" more or less. Hopefully they'll keep growing at a good pace.

good question- you have prompted me to measure...
when i pull the front straight down, it's actually a bit past my chin now & measures between 13 and 14 inches. it's finally long enough to reach the ponytail the very end of which is 2 inches above my beltline... it has been long enough since my last cut that there is not a clearly defined length in front or back. my bangs appear to be about chin length, the back looks to be just past mid-back. i'm still dealing with some of the old layers & am reluctant to cut to all one length at this time.
my last haircut left about 2 inches (more or less) on top and sides with the longest layers in back reaching my shoulder blades. maybe i shouldn't say 'more than 2 years' as i don't remember exactly when i last got an all over trim, but it was about 2 years ago- i thought longer. i had forgotten a small trim i gave myself last november when i cut about 4 inches of stragglers to clean up the back. i was using my own experience to give you a general idea of what to expect.
"On Being A Longhair", a general FAQ for longhairs that I wrote up primarily from information posted on this board, covers this in more detail than one should go into here. You might want to look at it, particularly part 3.
