We as men are somewhat limited to what hair accessories we can use. I usually wear an elastic rubber band in a pony tail or braid. Recently i have started wearing scrunchies, but some people say I shouldn't wear them, because they are for girls. My response is usually something like that is Mr. Girl to you baldy. Anyhow I wear what I want to wear, but i need help to make this less taboo. If you are a man with long hair and you don't like rubber bands wear a scrunchy, it is better for your hair and I like the way they look. What do you men and women think? What else do you suggest.
(Whoops, screwed up my first reply!)
I used to wear those thin, "generic" hair ties, but my hair got long enough that it hurt to pull them out. Then, I saw a clerk at my local Blockbuster Music wearing a large Teal scrunchie in his ponytail, and I thought, "Hey, THERE's an idea! Why not!" I madea pit stop to a beauty solon, picked up a package, and have worn them ever since. I won't wear anything else. In fact, if you can muscle the nerve, it's a hell of a lot of fun to collect scrunchies in varying colors, to match your wardrobe (grin). I've got several: Teal, Red, White, Maroon, Black, Hunter Green, Grey, and one in Purple (most of my wardrobe is black, so any color really works well for me). I also have them in different fabrics, from a basic cotton blend, to velvet. I found one at Osco Drug the other day, in a deep Purple velvet, that I want REALLY *BAD*. I'm going to get it tomorrow. Most of mine are large, too, though I've accepted smaller when large weren't available. In fact, every time I go to get groceries for me and my wife, one of my first stops is to the hair care section, to see if they have any new scrunchies.
They're INCREDIBLY comfortable, VERY soft, and painless to wear. The most important advantage: THEY SLIDE OFF EFFORTLESSLY!! And my wife enjoys the added convenience of being able to borrow any of them when she doesn't feel like wearing her own hair down.
If you can deal with any harrassment you might encounter from wearing them, I HIGHLY recommend them! I have yet to get hounded myself, but I'm probably one of the luckier ones (grin).
Could you tell me what a scrunchie is? I tried to find them at Rite Aid (I live in Sacramento) but wasn't sure if it is a brand name or a type of tie. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanks.
Both, actually.
I get away with scrunchies, and don't see why they are a problem. I prefer them over standard bands, particularly when sleeping or otherwise horizontal. They don't hurt. Beyond that, I still haven't outgrown my bandana phase, and may never spirtually.
Side note... last week I had my first chance to *really* dress up since I have had past-shoulder hair and a beard. Great fun. Not sure where I got the feeling... but I knew enough not to tie back then... just great.
Actually, for some formal occasions, my girlfriend and I are working on a kilt. Should be interesting.
A manufacturer named Scunci makes black ponytailers in two sizes. They are an elasicized plastic and they don't pull your hair. I've always been told to NEVER use rubber bands, that they are murder on your hair (especially if breakage is a problem, as it is for me). The downside is that they get stretched out after about two days.
I've seen them at Walgreen's, CVS and Bradlees (cheapest at Bradlees - $1.99 for 48, as opposed to the $2.99 everyone else charges).
As for scrunchies; nah. Although my employer allows long hair on men, I think using a scrunchie would really be pushing the envelope. Outside of the office is another thing; if it feels good, do it. No scrunchies for me, though. My daughter would take them just like she takes everything else of mine.
I really don't see the problem with scrunchies. Nor do I see a gender male vs. female thing with them. Scrunchies are the only hair tie I use - they go on quick, come off quick and are really comfy and don't seem to damage my hair. Of course when not wearing the scrunchie, I do not store them on my wrist - that's really too fem for me and what I would consider pushing things.
Primarily, I have black ones and white ones, cotton material. I do have several black, navy and red velvet ones, I wear for more special occasions though!
Oh, come on! Where's your sense of adventure? They'd look WONDERFULLY dainty on us guys! ;D
Maybe in Barbie "Malibu Pink" :)
I wear a 4" hair clip which really spreads out the hair and makes
for a very attractive way to wear your hair back. There are
many kinds and colors providing alot of choices.
Scrunchies would definately not go over well with my 4 guys and dragging a closed band through the hair can be quite damaging so I created a limited edition series of nicely discreet black elastic ties with wonderful carved or sterling silver beads. You wrap the tie around till its tight and slip one bead over the other. Just reverse to release and the tie slips right out of even the curliest hair. They wear them every day. The full line can be purchased exclusively at Hair Boutique:

I've had tons of great response from the men who have tried them. They say they've never seen anything like them for men and they work great.
You might like them too!
Best wishes to all,
Dawn
Is there a web site that describes these hair accessories,
shows what they look like, and tells how to use them?
I see people recommend hair ties, scruchies, hair clips, hair bands,
etc. I don't quite know what all these terms mean. I suppose that
girls absorb all this information as they grow up and experiment
with hair styles, but as I'm male my hair was always short until
recently. Is there somewhere on the web I can get this course in
"Hair Control 101"?
Thanks
Thanks for the support, I have now officially banned rubber bands from my hair! I use scrunchies, butterfly clips, and headbands. But scrunchies are what do it for me. I wore two in my hair for the first time the other day. One was to hold the braid and the other was the start of the braid. Tomorrow I'm going to go for three in white.
I use scrunchies - black, brown or dark blue - during the summer, when I have to dress up or when I'm doing things where my hair could get in the way. Otherwise I let my hair free. I have tried elastics too, but they are hard to pull down and are more likely to damage the hair.
I am the only longhair at my workplace, but I don't have any problems with it.
