Due to a slight curl in my hair it sometimes can appear as if I had set it, especially as it approached shoulder length. Recently I got it trimmed in a layered style and this did not help the situation. I got a lot of crap at work when it started to "flip" but that finally stopped. I like the layered style and would like to let it get to about three or four inches below the shoulders but each time that I get it trimmed the "set look" becomes more apparent. Should I just say, the hell with it and do it anyway. Any comments from you guys (women too)?
Honestly, do whatever you want to. If you like it layered, then layer it. Ignore the comments. Your hair is yours to take care of, not other peoples. Explain this to them in the most civil manner possible.
I'm with Chaeya on this one. A little wave.c'mon I purposely wear a french braid and do it wet so when I let my hair out at the end of the day I have full curls. If this is a issue to you, you probably want to have your hair long and more feminine. You just have to ask yourself if there was nobody to make fun of your hair how would you wear it. The answer is probably something that might scare you. I used to wear my hair in a pony tail to hide the girl look. However the girl look was lurking in that pony tail. Of course, I don't call hair to the shoulders long. How about to the behind. Yes I can't hide it at this length. For heavens sake, grow it out. IF you have wavy hair and are embarrassed wear it in a pony tail. Just let yourself go and flaunt it while you got it.
You what I'm gonna say, do it as to your employer, deal with it. No wonder this world is so complicated - a slight curl - geez. Good luck, friend.

My father always thought that anything longer than a crewcut was a "feminine" hairstyle.
Bill - I say let it grow. Think the flip is a hot look. Have had mine cdurl at the ends all across the back. The more the fem look the better I say. - so what are you going to do?
right on shaun - let it grow.
When my hair was long (I got it cut in a moment of weakness and am slowly growing it back), if I let it dry loose (not pulled into a ponytail) it usually formed perfect sausage curls like Shirley Temple's, particularly on the left where the hair is curlier. I thought that was a bit much, :) but when I combed through it it would separate into big, loose waves. I really preferred that to wearing it in a ponytail, which I did on weekdays to look slightly more "professional" at work. (No one at work ever said a thing about my hair while it was long, which rather surprised me, since I work around a lot of lawyers. A few women - no men - told me after I cut it whether they'd liked or disliked it long, but no one ever said, "Get it cut!")
The hair was straighter when I took it out of the ponytail at the end of the day. If you, personally, aren't happy with the "set look," can you dry it pulled back and then comb it out? If it doesn't bother you, then let it flip all it wants. One of the reasons I had mine cut was... I figured if it's pulled back in a ponytail 5 days out of seven, what's the point of having it long? It might as well be short! Bottom line: do what you're comfortable with.
Bill, try combing your hair from underneath. That is slide your comb between your neck and your hair and then comb the hair. The flip I believe comes from combing only from one side. Its simular to using a scissors to curl ribbons. If you comb from the other side it will straighten out after a while. Mine did when I did this.
Why not? Indeed. Why not? I can't think of a reason.
If you really do get a lot of crap about it, consider
learning to deal with the curl rather than the comments.
A quick hit from a large barrel curling iron or even a
straightening iron can flatten out even the worst flip
for a workday.
But the real question is why not? Enjoy the style and
wear it as your own hair -
Hair has no intrinsic gender - the most important
thing is that you care for it well.
A blow dryer and a large round brush works wonders. My hair is naturally well in between curly and wavy. Right now my hair is cut in basically a bob just below my ears with bangs to my eyes and a few layers here and there. I wash, condition, and blow dry my hair straight every day (except on weekends sometimes). It usually takes about 15-20 minutes but it looks great when I am done. Without the dryer and the round brush I would have unruly hair with it this long. As for the feminine side, my hair looks feminine when I dry it into my bob but it also looks great on me. Now some people tell me that I have a girls' hairstyle but who are they to judge? If you like it and it looks good ignore the ignorant people that make these comments. Most are probably men that are too insecure with their own masculinity and/or are homophobic or something. A blow dryer, a little straightening balm (I like Redken), and a round brush will do wonders for curly/wavy hair.
