Hey guys...I know we all go through periods of unhappiness with our hair but right now I really am losing faith. My hair's the longest it's ever been at around 7-8 inches after 14 months growth but it's starting to turn against me. Because it's so kinky and curly it can get kinda wild so for a while I've been adopting a policy of only combing it out every couple 'weeks and just putting water on it each day and finger combing but as of late, RIGHT AT THE FRONT my bangs have started making themselves into really tight, tight dreads. I don't know why this is happening because nowhere else on my head is dreading but right now I have 4 really skinny, but really irritating dreads right in front of my face. If I cut the dreaded parts out of them all, 3 would lose about 6-8 months growth and one would have to go altogether. I wouldn't mind if this was happening on the sides and back where my hair is, if anything curlier as I could shave that and do the undercut, but right in front...I don't want a fringe! Is there a way of getting dreads out while keeping the hair or is it time to be more drastic? Maybe I'm really just not meant to have conventional long hair.
Oh and BTW-I really don't want dreads, if anyone suggests that. They're just not my thing...All I wanted was a Shane Embury style 'fro do...:(
Is it time to give up the long hair dream?
My hair does the same thing. I comb my hair (while wet) once every two weeks. When I comb it, It becomes much less curly, let also much less thick. As two weeks progress, it dreds/long spiral curls up (even while washing and conditioning as normal). My best advice for you would be...
1) Take baths. I know it sounds dumb, but dunk your entire head under and fingercomb while in that state.
2) Make sure you are rinsing all of the shampoo/conditioner out of your hair. Any left over stuff will get sticky and assist the dreds.
3) don't tuck your hair behind your ears all the time. This forces the locks together.
Out of sheer curiousity, how do you feel about dreads? Could you ever see yourself wearing them?
Just wondering, because it looks as if your hair could dread fairly easily/quickly.
Also - I read somewhere that VO5 Conditioner can loosen dreads. Have you tried any products to try method this Buzzo?

My hair begins to form natural dredlocks about 5-7 days without washing it. I've gone this far without washing it once (crazy week with exams and papers due). It was a real pain to comb out and cost me quite a few strands. If I do wash my hair regularly, but do not comb it, I get long spiral curls that tend to resemble dreds, but can easily come out by combing. These two things are much different.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes, I have thought about dreds. However, I like the dreds that look more like braids almost. The really thin ones that are sharp on the ends. I've never been a fan of only having 10 dreds on one's head with these huge round tips. If I were to get them, I would definatly have thm put in and not let them form naturally.
However, I enjoy the aspects of loose hair a lot. I fear that dreds would only make me happy for a short amount of time and I would miss my hair.
Thanks for the advice guys. On reflection they are really thin and just look like thick hair strands so they don't look too out of place but it's from all the ear pushing and tying the bangs back...I should've realised that before and will try and do it less often now. Still, looks like one will loosen out, I'll give it a good condition a couple times over tomorrow and see...Aside from that my 'fro's doing nicely! Got some nice comments from the local talent tnoight at the club...:) And people say Mr. Embury's hair isn't great...
You have an excellent and unique type of hair and it will be *awesome* in due time. I know it's a pain right now but I'm sure it will be worthwhile down the road.
