Today I decided to face the outside world with my hair in a tail (everything but the bangs goes in now) so I've had my hair tied for about 12 hours or so. Well, anyhow, I just let it all down again and my hair as never hung down so well...it actually looks like long hair now, rather than a mass of dense curls. I've only been growing 15 months so I'm sure some of you others could do this too. Take it from me, tying is the answer!
As long as it isn't parted as well as being tied back, cool.

Nah, apart from the bangs, like I say. Out of interest what does that cause, JoNty?
Fading, baldness. It's something to do with how the hair roots are pulled. If they're pulled back over your head, then it should be fine.

Question:
did u put it in a pony tail when it was wet and let it dry like that... or did u put as much as possible in when it was already dry...
I am at about the same stage with curly hair, but have never made the venture yet... the front bangs... me no like :)
Well, usually I put a little water in my hair at the start of the day so I can shape it better pat it dryer with a towel and then let it dry naturally, so it was moist but not wet (I've heard that you can break your hair if you tie it when it's wet). My bangs are hanging well anyhow, now, because I have them pushed behind my ears a lot...
I'm just shy of 15 months, and have only worn the ponytail when my hair was straightened. I'll try this sometime (I'll probably do it on a day when I'm not going anywhere, just as a test)
Thanks for the suggestion!
