Hi, Im very very curious how i could tell If I inherit male pattern baldness. Im only 16 right now and my hair is currently 2 inches past my chin. I have very strait and fine hair. I heard the male pattern baldness comes from the mothers side and the scary thing is that my moms dad started balding or recieting at the age of 20. I think there were a lot of men in my moms side who had male pattern baldness. Im praying to god that I won't inherit this gene. Can someone please tell me what the earliest stages of thinning look like? I just feel a little paranoid about this. My dad doesn't like my hair long and is trying to scare me by saying Im thinning on the crown of my head. Can you tell this by looking at your own forhead? I've asked my sister and my friends about this they think its not true. I dunno, maybe me dads just jealous because he hardly has hair :-). There are just many ways that male pattern baldness effects others. It would be grateful if i could find some tips or pics of what it looks like.
Thank you :-)
Stoner,
My dad, who is bald, used to tell me (at around your age) that my hair was thinning on my crown and that I would be bald by 21. I'm now 21 and a half and nowhere close. The fact is, people go bald for any number of reasons that are still a mystery. I've read Web sites about hair that state that new research into male pattern baldness states that it can be inherited by both sides. (The Long Hair Site) Besides, there is a natural thin area at your crown called the "hair whorl" and it's almost like a whirlpool from which your hair grows out from. Whether or not it grows clockwise or counter-clockwise is inherited. Ask your Biology teacher!
The fact is, we have no idea what the future has in store, and personally, I'd rather be bald than contract cancer, wouldn't you? Why worry? Besides, there are so many solutions and so-called antidotes, that you could probably grow back what you might loose.
I grew my hair to about 8 inches two years ago and then cut it 'cause its body/height was bothering me. I experimented with various buzz cuts and shorter styles for awhile, but nothing seemed right. I've finally resolved not to cut my hair NO MATTER WHAT, until it reaches its longest length. If I go bald in the meantime, I guess that's its longest length. Too bad! Live and let live. Besides, this girl I had a crush on awhile back liked bald guys (Patrick Stewart and Yul Brenner)- some psycho, hey- to each her own!
