I dunno about everyone else, but I've noticed a change in attitude from my friends and family towards growing my hair. Apart from the ocassional light-hearted comment, my family and friends have turned full circle from being largely against long hair to being supportive and encouraging.
This was really hammered home to me the other day when my Mom, actually brought me a pack of hairbands! Its not like I sent her out for them, she just saw them and thought of me.
We had a post a few weeks ago which showed that most people's partners/wife's and girlfriends were largely very supportive, I wonder if its the same with family and friends?
Has anyone noticed a change in attitude from their friends or family? Or have you had to talk them around? Or do you just get zero support?
Near the beginning of my journey when I was smack middle in my awkard stage, not to many people said anything, my wife and her mother told me they didn't like my hair and my best friend. This was the stage where I could not even put it in a pony-tail yet. As my hair grew longer and began behaving better, I began to receive compliments from women and men. Still my Mother-In-Law doesn't like it this long, but she doesn't complain anymore either. My wife seems to like it, at least more so than 8 or 9 months ago and she receives compliments about my picture a lot.
Well not much of anything actually... When first growing it out I got the occasional comments from my family that I should cut it. But they knew I wouldn't change my mind regardless what they said, so it wasn't too serious.
Now that I can call it "long" I have neither got any positive nor negative comments about it. Closest I've got to a positive comment was "have you used a straightening iron?" by my sister on christmas, and that kind of had the tone that it was a "girly" thing to do. But then again she pretty much think long hair is "girly" regardless... LOL ;)
Some of my friends have long hair too so I get only positive feedback from them. My relatives are fairly conservative christians so the longer my hair gets the more they complain about it. Nearly every day they tell me to "at least trim it". Well, it's their problem, not mine. ;)
i honestly do not understand "christians" and their problem with long hair... i grew up in a VERY conservative christian home, my step-dad is actually a minister... back then i got some flak (i wanted to start growing my hair out when i was in junior high school), as he was seriously strict on appearance (suit and tie to church, neat hair, etc., etc.). but as i got older, pretty much my last two years of high school, he didn't tell me anything about it... well, i've gone through the awkward stage a few times now, and cut it twice because of aggravation. this time i will not cut i though...it's been six months since my last hair cut, and my mom and family actually gave me some compliments on the hair this christmas.
Based on your photos FinK you look like you've had practically no problems with the "awkward stage" I find it hard to believe that people actually tell you to trim it. Afterall it looks awesome!
Thanks for the compliment :)
Hi Sorted,
I have been growing my hair out for about six months now. Last hair cut was may 23, 2003. When I started hearing the "You need a hair cut" comments and told family and friends that I was going to let my hair grow I got essentially no support. Now six monthes into the process all the comments are positive. Guess the nay sayers just kep their mouths shut.
Thnks for asking,
Rod
Some of my friends have even longer hair than I do, and the rest who don't have long hair simply couldn't care less. It's not an issue with friends basically. My dad had long hair before he joined the RAF, so he's perfectly fine with it, as is my mum.

I get zero support but I have a clear position, that I like my hair how it is and if my mother is still argueing against the hair I simply say that we will never come to an agreement, but I like my hair and I am happy that I do not have lost it (like my father).
Mostly this is enough.
And this Christmas I got a CD from the musical HAIR from my brothers wife, and my nieces grow their hair long :-)
