I'm growing my hair long, but I don't understand the fascination with wanting to put it in a pony tail. Everyone says to grow the front and sides long and eventually (as if it's a goal to attain) it will be long enough to be tied back. Um, excuse me, but unless my hair is just plain in the way or I'd need to look neat for a special occaision, I wanna let it all hang out. Show off your hair, guys, don't hide it in a pony tail. When it's in a pony tail you can't readily see that it's long all over anyway - might as well have a mullet. Me? I want my hair long and blowing in the wind. I'm going for the Yanni look.
To illustrate my point further, take a look at these photos of Yanni:
Pretty obvious to me which looks better. Let it all hang out guys!!!
Hey, I hear Yanni's working on the Mullet look.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! :-)
For those of us who work in the "white collar" world of the office, and are lucky enough to have employers who accept our sartorial choice, LET'S NOT PUSH THE ENVELOPE!! If I were a musician, or otherwise self-employed in an industry where slavish adherance to "appearance" isn't the paramount consideration, I'd probably Let It All Hang Out more often than I do (working on the car not included).
Besides -- believe it or not, I LIKE my hair in a ponytail and never really thought that I was stifling my self-expression by wearing it this way.
I agree! The pony-tail is just a way to HIDE the long-hair in case it is hardly acceptable.
I agree with wanting the hair to hang out, but I don't think these guys are fascinated because they want to hide their hair per se. Ponytails are great escapes from bad hair days or when you just don't have time to deal with it. Like its 8:00 a.m. here and I'm at work and my hair is braided back in a ponytail because I didn't have time to comb it this morning. And sometimes I like ponytails on guys because they give them a different appearance. I think its sexy to see a man all dressed up in a suit and sporting a ponytail, and when I see them again with it all loose, I get excited all over again as if its my first time seeing them with long hair.

m-w.com says a mullet is a fish -- what am I missing here?
Somehow the term mullet has been applied to the style that's long only in the back, like a lot of country western singers wear it. Billy Rae Cyrus is a good example of a mullet. There are websites regarding the mullet and most are degrading towards it for some reason. Hey, whatever. I think they look good sometimes too. Funny thing about those websites is that they include many pictures of people with long hair that aren't necessarily mullets. A true mullet looks like a short haircut only with long hair just in the back.
I've wondered about this myself. I can understand ponytails for work or for a change but why wear it like this all the time? Also, why do so many guys with long hair feel that they also have to have facial hair? As for the mullet, now that I've figured out what that means, ew. These are just my opinions thiugh and I know there are lots that feel different.

I'm sorry. I just had to do that...

Dear Willie,
You have made and interesting point there.
Well I have my hair tied in a pony tail most of the time, mainly because of my job, but also to keep it out of my face.
I have curly hair and am pretty lazy to brush it our and when the wind blows, it gets in my face.
Also when I brush my teeth, it gets in the way.
However, I do agree that a longhair looks a lot more impressive with his hair down, especially if he has really long hair. However, in such cases, I also find the person impressive if he ties his hair in a loose pony tail with the hair covering his ears.
Regards
Charles
