Glad I finally found the site that I think can help me ..
Have worn short hair for years, mostly because my hair can be pretty curly and unruly. But I would like to try long again. Some problems: since my hair is curly, it tends to grow 'full' before long. Plus it also gets pretty scraggly looking. What would be a good compromise?? I was thinking of going for something a couple inches over the collar, full all over, but trimmed above the ear. Is that long? (would be by my current style ).
I've also been thinking that I should go for one last buzz-fling to get short hair out of my system and then just let it grow? Currently, it is about 2 inches long, so I know I have a ways to go, especially if I buzz it one last time.
Help me out, I am committed to a longer style, just need some advice on what to expect.
If you're committed, don't get the buzz cut. I have similar hair to what you describe yours as - very unruly. I let mine grow long in the back first (just over the collar). Growing the back first prevented the bushy head look of when it all grows in a once. I had a short hair cut last June and then never cut any of it till the end of January, when I got it trimmed all over except around the collar (basically a "mullet"). Since then, I've been letting it grow long. To keep it from curling up around my ears, I have to blow dry it with a cylindrical brush (one of the smaller ones with the metal bristles and the knobby things on the end of the bristles) and kind of pull it and curl it under while drying. It's a PITA every morning, but it's starting to look pretty cool now. I use a gel or leave-in conditioner to protect my hair from the high heat of the blow dryer. Trick is to pull it straight with the brush and dry it completely dry or it'll just curl up. I hold the blow dryer almost right on my hair when I dry it. I think letting the back come in first helped me because I was able to blend the longer hair on the sides with the already long hair in the back to make it more of a transition to long hair. I may cut the back at some point when the sides/front have grown in sufficiently to make it all pretty even.
