I have been absent for about two weeks now, and as I have returned, I must say, I am AMAZED at this whole mullet thing. I have surfed this board for at least a year, and I have NEVER even heard the term until today. Being somewhat curious about it, and desparately trying to find out exactly WHAT it is, I dug around various web sites and finally found out.
I have obviously seen this type of haircut before, but to be honest, I have to question this. To me, seeing as how it was so often the subject of ridicule, this look might better be defined as "two different haircuts." Perhaps the OLD Billy Ray Cyrus haircut would fit here (But have you seen his recent cut? Longer layers on top and the sides and shorter in the back than it used to be. . .it actually kinda blends together now). Many of the pictures I saw posted at the various sites were of BEAUTIFUL heads of hair, simply with a layerd cut, which to me, is in no way, an object of ridicule. Is this some kind of snobbery exhibited at those who have layers as opposed to those who have it all one length?
I admittedly don't particularly care for the OLD Billy Ray look, but that is an extreme. Those who have layers (perhaps 5-7 inches in length) and longer than that in the back, to me, just have a layered cut. To categorize them in, what some would see, as a negative category, is kinda sad. If there is any room for ridicule (and I feel there really is not) then it might be found in those who have their hair cut like the OLD Billy Ray, i.e. EXTREMELY short on the top and sides and EXTREMELY long in the back. Does anyone else out there agree with me?
I'm with you, Allen, and like I mentioned before, most of the so-called terrible mullets like real short sides and long back originated in the early 80s(?)(First time I noticed them). I haven't really seen many of them here in So. California, don't know about anywhere else. My boyfriend mentioned he wanted to clip his sides short and I threatened to shave his head in his sleep. Needless to say who won there.
