My children (3, and 4 years old) have never had a hair cut and both
want to grow their hair very long. Does anything speak against that?
(for the health of the hair) Will their hair need to be cut before it has reached the length desired and why? THANK YOU.

Without throwing a bunch of stuff at you, the easiest thing to keep in mind is that you'll know when their hair needs something done to it be it a trim, cut, styling, etc., especially if you have a desired length in mind already.
Will their hair need to be cut before it has reached the length desired and why?
The short answer is NO. Kids hair tends to be finer than adults, but that won't cause any potential problems you mentioned.
Then again, what will you put in the envelope that is pressed between the pages of all baby books entitled "Junior's first hair cut" :)

If their hair looks healthy then just let it grow. Split ends probably should be trimmed off. When allowed to grow uncut, their hair may reach a length where it might get caught in things and pose some risk as a result. For small children with mid back to waist length hair I would recommend keeping it tied in a ponytail, especially during play. A ponytail keeps all the hair gathered together and minimizes getting it caught things. Absalom
GREAT advice about the safety issues. A ponytail is a great idea. After all, aren't there tons of little girls with long hair? no one ever seems to mind that...

Either sex for that small of a child I would keep it 1/3 .. 1/2 way down their back. It is a dangerous world with lots of moving parts to get caught up in. A pony tail doews not prevent having ones head pulled into a fan or bicycle chain, etc. Of course as a parent the decision is in your hands and there are far more important decisions in their lives than this one. Just thinking about a safe time out there playing in the sand ...
The answer is easy: don't cut the childrens' hair before they want it. If your children want very long hair, let them have it.
How long is their hair now?
