When you guys are growing your hair out, do you brush it in the mornings after you take a shower? Do you leave it wet? or do you dry it? Please let me know the basics to managing your hair while growing it out.
I always shower the night before, and do all my styling before going to bed.
Saves time in the mornings; and besides, who wants to leave the house with wet hair? :-)

I usually shower at night but If I do shower In the morning then I leave my hair wet because I like the look of my hair better when it is wet.
...always comb my hair with a wide-toothed comb immediately after getting out of the shower. You don't want to brush since that tends to damager your hair when wet. Then, I usually just leave it to air dry...no blow dryers for me unless I have to. Finally, since I'm in school, I'm able to get away with not putting any chemicals in my hair and instead put a hat on (I'm still in the awkward stage, otherwise I'd wear a tail).
I generally take a shower in the morning, and when I get out and my hair is still wet I use a comb and part it to the side a bit. Then I just leave it to air dry as much as possible(I find that hair lays the best this way). Generally this gives me good results, a nice feel, and cool waves rather than a scraggly mess that it would be if I was too rough on it. Give that a try and see if it works.
NEVER brush wet hair.
Never brush straight hair when it's wet.
Never brush curly hair when it's dry.
Never brush curly hair period! Unless you're a sado-masochistic throwback to the 70's :O
This has been brought up before and others such as myself with long hair do brush out our hair when it is wet, for many of us it is necessary to do it this way due to how the length affects tangling during drying if not brushed out. It's a bit of a misconception that this will wreck your hair although it does sound reasonable in theory.
As with everything you do with your hair, try to be gentle with it. Don't be in a rush and don't overly force your way through it. Your conditioners also will make a difference as to how your hair brushes out after being washed (and conditioned).
Basically you have to try different things out to see what works best on your own unique hair type. Don't worry, you won't destroy it by doing that.
