Hi
I am growing my hair out, and trying to find a way to keep it neat.
These past couple months I have been using Frizzease mousse - putting it on my wet hair after showering and then blow-drying while combing. This seems to work for the most part, except for the last inch of hair that always curls up and points outward. See photo - if the link doesn't work it's at:

I thought about getting that last inch cut off, but I don't want to because that will mean I have to wait longer for it to grow out. Also the new last inch of hair might curl up anyway, because it might be caused by the shape of my neck. Any advice?
Thanks
Robert
I think you're right that cutting it isn't a solution to the problem. I think your hair looks fine in the picture you posted, but if you don't want it to stick out try using a large round brush when you blow dry it. They have brushes like that made for blow drying with a metal barrel. I use the brush to roll up my hair, then slowly unroll it, keeping the hair taut, while using the blow dryer to dry the hair that is being pulled straight above the brush. At the bottom, I dry the hair wrapped around the brush, which makes it curl in a little.
You can also try blow drying your hair while it's wrapped around large velcro rollers, as large as possible for your hair length. Don't be afraid of rollers. Large ones like that don't curl the hair so much as making a more smooth and groomed look. Again the hair should be pulled taut. To get the greatest effect, after drying the hair, leave the rollers in for maybe 5 minutes while the hair completely cools off.

dont cut it, im sure you have already worked this one out, but i empathise with you. my hair is about your length, i hate the fact that when you wash it it gets really boofy and looks stoopid. but as for the curl out, mine does it, i had it trimmed to try and avoid spilt ends and that didnt help the curl, i think its just something that will grow out and with blow drying will get trained to go straight.
Any thoughts on hair curling down to the neck? I say, don't cut it off; it helps to round-out the corner. Probably, because hair roughly grows in a helix of waves, the direction of curls can be quite unpredictable.
I had a similar problem when I grew my short hair out three years ago. What I did when my hair was that length, was to blow dry my hair and take my fingers & a round brush and make the curl go under. I couldn't get it to go perfectly straight, but it looked better with the curl underneath,IMO. A four months ago I got my shoulder length hair cut to a chin length style and I am growing it out again, but it doesn't curl up as much since it is all one length. So keep growing your hair for awhile and when it is one length it will be more manageable.Good luck!
My hair has a natural wave and every time I start growing it out I get similar curls. I understand how frustrating it can be during the difficult "bad hair stage". After all, there is the macho image to maintain. You probably don't want to look like a girl. But there are curly haired guys with long hair, and they don't worry about the flips and curls.
The curl could be because some of your hair is still a bit shorter in back than the hair on your neck. However, I don't think cutting it will help. You want length and that just takes time and a lot of patience. Your best bet, I think, is just to go with your hair the way it is and try not to worry about it. I know that isn't easy, but sometimes the curl can actually attractive. And it doesn't necessarily look feminine. Celebrate your hair the way it is!
My hair is halfway down my back, and by the time it grew passed my shoulders the curl didn't matter. So, as frustrating as it may seem, just hang in there and it will eventually get better. If this is the first time you have grown your hair long, the biggest problem could be self conciousness. I have found that the longer my hair gets the more I have developed an "I don't care what the others think" attitude. Believe me, if your goal is long hair, you will gain confidence, and the negative concerns (or comments) are easier to pass off.
Good luck in your hair growing goals and keep us posted on how it progresses.
Thanks,
Here is a picture of my hair when it's behaving.
It's true that as time goes on I am less self-conscious about going out in public. I do get some odd reactions, though.
I have exactly the same problem with the ends of the hair curling. Cutting isn't the solution. I've had mine trimmed several times, and the remaining hair always curls in exactly the same way as the hair before it did.
What I've found helps is letting your hair dry while it's tied back, ie pull it tight and put an elastic tie on it. As soon as your hair is completely dry, you can take it out again.
I've found that this method made my already straight hair on top even straighter, and also pretty much got rid of the curl at the back. If you think it's going to take to long and you want the tie out soon, you can "almost dry" your hair with a drier, and then put the tie in.
