and im taking my flat iron with me
im gonna be taking it in my carry on bag
when they xray it(if they do?)
what will they think about seeing it on the xray machine?
will i have to unload my bag so they think its safe?
Don't you think that that question would be best directed to whichever airline you'll be flying? How the hell should we know what they'll think?

If you are traveling in America they will.
They will probably know what it is because they see them all day.
It is not likely, but you might and it would be no big deal. Pack it on the top easy for them to get to and you'll be fine.
