Can anyone explain how these work in somewhat detail and possibly recommend one they think is good. The under layer of the back area of my hair gets severely knotted and I really need a solution.

A trim of the short neck hairs may help.
I use Aussie Slip as a detangler.
You might also try a laminate. Paul Mitchel's Gloss Drops has no silicon in it and helps keep hair seperated.
Be sure to throughly brush out that area. I find that often as I brush, that area sometimes doesn't get fully straightened out due to the hair on top taking most of the brush. You may need to alter your brushing style to come in from the side and even underneath.
Alright I think im going to try the Aussie detangler. Ive tried brushing the under layer doesnt seem to work very well and ive tried correcting the knots in the shower but that has even more disastorous results as to much ahir is pulled out with that method.
