I realize that this is a little after the point, but I've been away from this board for about a week. I colour my hair because I dont' like my natural colour. I go for red tones, and I especially like Burgundy. I don't have a lot of experience with colour (I'm only 18 and haven't had time to use many of the products out there), but I do have some reccomendations, if they might help.
My favorite brand is L'Oreal's "Feria." If one doesn't overuse it, it doesn't damage the hair too much. But the real reason I like it is it give absolutely gorgeous, long-lasting colour.
I have also used Clairol's Natural Instincts. It's not damaging either, to the point that it's almost like a condtioner. The colour doesnt' stay vibrant too long, but never really goes away. The best thing about it is that the roots are less visible.
I've also used Revitalique, made by Clairol. I don't like it. It didn't seem to last very long, and it changed the texture of my very fine hair.
I hope this little evaluation helps.

I definitely agree. I use this brand too, and I actually look forward to coloring my hair. It leaves my hair feeling wonderful- it's a shame they don't sell the after conditioner stuff separately, or I would buy it in a heartbeat. I use black, and it's more or less permanent- I've gone for three months without retouching it up (when I couldn't find the color and had to do without), and the color never went away, I just had roots.
i'm going to color my hair for the first time , i have shoulder lenth hair , was thinking of using "just for men"i know one box won't be enough, i called them and they said to get two boxes, anyway could i use a womens hair color and which one is right for me does it matter?
this is all new to me , are mens and womens hair the same?
one box is $6.00 ,any ideas would be greatly appreciatd , thanks bill

Well, I haven't used the brand you mentioned, so I can't say one way or another about it. But the ordinary hair color kits, even though they have women on the box, work just fine for men, too. I doubt there's any significant difference, except that from what you say they save a bit on the men's coloring by skimping on the amount. I use the 'women's' hair color, and don't have to worry about not having enough- there's usually some color left over afterwards.
