Well all,
I was laid off from my job, about 2 weeks ago. I won't go into details, but I wasn't the only person laid off, due to a contract change.
Any way, the new manager is a person I know, was a co-worker. He is trying to get me back, and called me to get together and discuss options.
So I go over to this local restauruant and am very optomistic. we talk for a while, and he says that If I want to come back, i'd have to cut my hair, and then he could convince corprate into bringing me back. I am told that the corprate people are not ok with it long. I didn't loose my cool, and didn't say anything one way or another.
I have decided, I will not do that, if I am wanted as much as I was told, then they will have to take me as is. I will not be a damn pupet on a string for their comfort and convience. I may not have an exact plan, or any great prospects yet, but I will find a way to make it with long hair in this world.
I learned from my mistake once before, And will not make the same again. So rest comfortably all, I haven't caved for the money.
I am very proud of you. Stay strong. That is just rediculous. I feel for you.
Good for you, it sounds to me as though they want to find any excuse they can to fire you and they probably will fire you eventually even if you were to cut your hair. The people you work for appear to me to be a bunch of petty, self seeking, manipulative, control freaks with delusions of godhood. You mention losing a job in the past even after cutting your hair to conform to company rules. That has to be the ultimate insult. You deserve better. I hope you will find an employer in the future who is more concerned with your ability than the length of your hair. Absalom
Sorry to hear of your misfortune. And then for this so called 'friend' of yours to suggest he may be able to hire you again if you conform to their ideals! Oh, I despair!
You definitely did the right thing; changing yourself for someone else will only make you resentful and unhappy. Dont be afraid to explore your opportunities for a while...this could be the best thing that ever happened to you!

Good for you. That took a lot of balls. It would have been easy to say 'forget it, I'll get my haircut' but you didn't. I never knew having long hair was such an issue for people until I decided to grow mine. It's ridiculous the amount of comments from friends, family and unknowns that I've had. Why can't people relax? It's only a bit of hair for god's sake! If I had a big swastika tattooed on my forehead then I could understand people having issue with my appearance but hair is just a natural thing.
Seems to me that is one company you don't want to be working for, even if you had short hair.
Darn right, I'm proud of you!! And you can be proud of yourself for being a person of principle. A much better career opportunity is about to present itself to you...just wait!
I am proud of you. I would have done the same. Either they'll take you as you are or they really don't need you. Stay confident.
Good for you! Bravo!!!!!!!
May you be sure to find another job soon without a "threat" involved soley on the basis that you desire to wear your hair long.
I wish you the best of luck.
I would have about 9 months more length right about now. Not to mention they fired me 3 days after they hired me because they were over staffed. I was but a fool back then.
It's not easy to make the kind of decision you did. You should
be proud of standing up for the things you believe.
Hope everythings turns out well.
Who knows, maybe that decision will make them see your strength of character, and that could put you in a very favorable light.
Keep us posted!
isn't there some leagal action that can be taken on such a case?
No. Are you implying that there should be?
Yeah - well done Tommy!
About the only way I'd cut my hair for a job would be if they compensated me to cover the time I'd spent growing it.
I'd be looking for about £25K-£30K per year of growth....
What no takers??
Shucks, I guess it would be cheaper to hire me and let me keep my hair then...
I have decided, I will not do that, if I am wanted as much as I was told, then they will have to take me as is. I will not be a damn pupet on a string for their comfort and convience. I am more than just proud: I'm AMAZED (but also worried)!! I cut my hair short in Y2K (it was waist-length before I cut it); it pretty much devestated me at the time, --- and I made a commitment to myself never to cut my hair short again. It is now mid-back , which you can see pictures of on my web site. However, we all need to survive financially in this world. My suggestion is to keep your long hair as neat & clean & pulled back as possible for whatever job interviews you go on. This will help tremendously! Prior to Y2K, I probably would have considered giving in to a haircut for a job; but now I reassure myself that whatever job would insist on short hair, simply is NOT the right "match" for me as a place of employment. If you live in an extremely conservative part of the country, though, it might be worth your while to purchase a short-haired wig for interviewing (or even for wearing on-the-job, if you have to)! I've known of guys who have done this, when caught between the proverbial "rock & a hard place" of wanting to keep their long hair, but needing to earn a living in their chosen profession as well. Do whatever it takes to both keep you happy personally, and also play the $$ survival game. Good luck!!!
Nice mane, It looks really healthy. Absalom
