I've worn my hair at various longish lengths for over ten years
now; I've settled most recently for 2-4 inches past shoulder
length. I wear it at all one length, combed straight back,
with no part. My wife has been hinting lately that I should start
to layer it. I'm dubious, remembering that when I once had
layered long hair I thought it looked too "girlish". I think
her request is coming from her getting the hots for the cover
art on a recent Andre Norton novel, a fantasy hero with long
feathered/layered hair :)
If anyone has any opinions on the pros/cons of layering, suggestions
for what to ask at a stylist, etc, I'd be happy to hear them.
the layering can be a good idea. My hair sounds like yours. I recently layered the front a bit, and cut sides short around my ears. Still flows great in the back and everyone seems to like it. I still can choose a ponytail to wear, and with the short sides which I sometimes mousse (sp?), I must admit it looks kind of hot.
Take a chance, man.
My hair is just a little bit above shoulder length and I wear it in a layered style. Since it has a slight wave to it, sometimes it looks as though I set it so at first I was worried about the "girl" look too. The reaction from women has been positive and my girlfriend, who wears hers in a similar style, seems particularly pleased. I plan on letting it get about 3-4" longer.
I was a little embarrassed to ask the stylist for a layered cut the first time but she just went to work and did a great job. Now I go back every two months to get it trimmed and it looks great when she gets done.
My feeling is that guys can wear most of the same long loose hair styles that women wear today without appearing too feminine. If I were you I would get it cut just the way she wants.
I'm with your wife. I love the feathered look on guys. Do it, man.

My hair at the minute is apparently layered, not intentionally,
but just from growing after being really short hair (so it's all
different lengths).
Trouble is, my hair has a really annoying curl right at the ends,
and as the hair ends are all at different heights, it has a kind
of bushy layer at the bottom :-/ I'd love to stop that ;-)
I went to get the longest hair cut back a bit a few days
ago, and the stylist says go back in 6 weeks and cut the longest
again and the layering should be about gone.
I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't for the curl. Because of the curl,
I (and I started doing it ages ago, so it's habit/safer ;-) )
have my hair go around the back of my ears. It now has a large
curl in whenever I don't put it around my ears :-( Hense
I always do...
I try to stop the curl at the ends, and the larger curl but
am running out of ideas -- any help ? I have tried drying
it with a hot hair dryer and pulling the hair straight and
drying it close up, as well as pulling it straight and
leaving it for a bit while I sit somewhere until it is dry.
As it dries, the curl just comes back :-(
I use a leave-in conditioner. Just ran out today, so I'm
gonna get another brand tomorrow to see what another is like.
The hair at the side of my head (front) isn't long enough
to tie back yet at all, but long enough to go back around
my ear (where it then curls out to the side, and forwards).
I'm considering buying one of those straighting-devices,
which I imagine use a lot of heat. On TV she just pulls
it down with wavy hair between, and it comes out straight ;-)
Suggestions thankfully received :-)
Nick, try rolling the ends of your hair on large Velcro rollers. I find that you can control the unruly curl to your hair by doing so. Use a gel or setting lotion if you have wet hair. You can also roll dry hair as well. Use your blowdrier to 'set', and after the hair has cooled, remove the rollers and brush out. You can also back comb or tease the hair alittle to help direct the way you want it to look. I hope this helps. Finish with a shot of hairspray.

Watch out! Anything that produces "lots of heat" will damage your hair to some extent with each use, and in time this could affect the total length you can get or the condition of your hair at its ends.
I have thick hair that curls up at the end when I just wash it and let dry. I am hoping that this curl is caused by interaction with my neck and shoulders - and will stop when the hair gets longer.
In the meantime, I am using Frizz-Ease Mousse. I wash my hair every third day, and rinse with cool water every day (morning). Then I apply a handful of the mousse and work it in, especially at the ends. Then I comb it and use a hair dryer while combing to get most of the dampness out.
This procedure seems to flatten out almost all of the curl. You might want to try Frizz-ease or another product with silicone in it.
Same here, and I'd prefer thinner hair. ATM it often goes out at the sides, and looks more like "big hair" than "long hair" ;-)
I used to put in (only for one bottle worth of time though, I keep trying a new product...) some leave in conditioner then dry with hair dryer... but after a short time it was back curled :-( I bought some Boots brand smoothing complex (a gel type thing), but it made it worse yesterday and even more "frizz" (I think that's the term, I mean the hair wasn't smooth, but all the shorter strands were bent out and things). I probably played with it to much though, so today I've rinsed it and combed it straight (after putting on some of the gel) and left it alone. It's almost dry now.
I'll buy some tomorrow and see how that goes.
Cheers !
