Hi, I'm Bill D. and I'm new on this site. I'm now growing my own hair long again, 18 years after I cut it off.
I've been hanging out over on The Long Hair Site (tlhs.org) which is for long women's hair. One point that's been hammered home in discussions at TLHS is the importance of not causing breakage by tying hair using rubber or elastic bands. When you remove them, you tend to break or damage hairs. This damage adds up over time.
When I previously had long hair, I tied it back a lot using elastic hair bands, and accepted the damage as unavoidable. Now that I'm growing it long again, I want to take better care of it and minimize damage and breakage. I'm wondering if there are any other alternative ways to tie your hair back that do not damage it.
I'd appreciate any ideas or personal experiences. Thanks!
Bill D.
Bill, I use a product made by Scunci which is a plastic band with enough elasticity to be used easily, but which is smooth and doesn't pull at your hair. They come in packages of 48 and are available either in all black or in multi colors. I think this may be what you're looking for.
You can find them at places like CVS and Walgreens for $2.99/pkg, but look first at KMart; I got some there recently for $1.99. If you live in the Northeast, Bradlee's also has them at that price. Other mass retailers will likely carry them as well.
Go to drugstore.com, they have a great selection of ponytail ties.

I've seen that site; they sell lots of good stuff at "okay" prices, but the one thing they don't have is the Scunci product I described above.
Isn't this what you're talking about?:

Goody also sells "ouchless" pony elastics:

I don't think so. The package isn't the same.
