I wanted to post this because I'm kind of excited about it, and I also have some related questions. Recently I inherited some things from my grandmother, including two antique hairbrushes.
I have not found a boar bristle brush that didn't seem very stiff, and I worried it was actually pulling my hair out. I'm not sure what the bristles in these old brushes are, but they seem fairly soft and are an off-white color, whereas the boar bristles I've seen were black and very stiff. Could these possibly be camel's hair, like some paintbrushes?
Also, does anyone have recommendations on cleaning a brush? I found a web page that suggested dipping the bristles in a solution of shampoo and water, after removing all the loose hairs with a wide-tooth comb. I'm still working on combing out these brushes - they have a lot of fuzzballs deep down between the bristles. (I'm wondering if my grandma had used them as lint brushes.)
