I'm an English teacher at an urban, inner city school. Our students are primarily African-American. Longer hair on guys is coming in to syle. Some have their hair in afros on certain days, and other days they braid it. Some of them have pretty long hair.
Well, today is quite a slow day here. Many of our students are out doing the St Patrick's day festivities. Many are performing in parades and such. So, with it being an easy day in class, I let a girl braid my hair. What are called braids to them is what we refer to as "corn rows". So now I have corn rows! Serious braids!
Also, the hair that hangs down from the scalp is called "hang time". Man, I have a LOT of hang time. I've been getting a lot of comments on my new "do".
I wish I could take a pic and share. It is quite interesting. The braids are very, very tight. It was a bit painful when she was braiding.
Just thought I'd share my hair experience for the day.
What exactly do corn rows look like? [excuse my ignorance]. Can you pu up a pic?
just do a google image search like
http://images.google.com/images?q=cornrows&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search>this one.
duh... basic html!
I remember when they did that to me on Halloween. It was great... I had "hang time" down to my elbows.
They call it "stretch" here... How much hang time did you have?
(Corn rows f#$%^king hurt to take out, and they destroy your hair, if it's fine enough... be VERY careful) I have to admit it looks very cool when it's all curled up and stuff after you take the braids out. :)
Incredibly, my hair was pretty straight after taking the braids out last night. I was surprised, considering my hair is naturally a bit wavy/ curly to start with.
I had a LOT of hang time. Amazingly, my hair didn't appear to look any shorter despite the small braids.
Getting the braids hurt like a mutha, but taking them out didn't.
I might let them do this again next week before I go on spring break!
