I have noticed that I can't wear anything but scrunchies. It is an
addiction. It is much better for your hair, but looks a little girly.
Luckily I don't care. Anybody else wearing them.
Mark,
About three months ago I discovered scrunchies and although I don't wear my hair in a ponytail very often, when I do I now use one. I feel it is better for the hair (and causes less damage). I have ones in darker colors which don't look so girly. I feel if you stick with masculine colors it really doesn't make much difference once you get used to wearing them. Plus, in California you see guys with a wide variety of pony tail ties.
A couples weeks ago I found some really nice scrunchies that are not as wide as the traditional ones (only about 1/4 inch). They are made by Goody and I plan to get more. I found them at a store called Price Less, but you might find them at other drug stores.
Good luck! And keep using the scrunchies... it might give someone else the courage to do it also.

Hello ,
Sometime ago , i searched the internet to find out what the hell a
scrunchie was. Looking at it I find it indeed very girly.
I don't think I ever gone wear that , but I encourage everyone
that does. You said that in California you see guys whith a variety
of ponytail ties. I'm very anxious to know what. Could you tell me what.? I've already ordered those celtic hairties from the highlander
store , but if there are other things that men can wear , please let
me know.
Best regards

I used to be this way about scrunchies also. Then I decided to actually try them, and I've changed my mind. I wear them all the time now. My recommendation would be to go into Claire's or Walmart/Target/Kmart (the latter group vary a lot with location, so selection will vary) and go to the scrunchie section. For a first purchase, get a black or burgundy velvet scrunchie. They don't look girlie at all.
Hi Ronny,
Scruncie's do seem girly when you first see them, but after wearing them for awhile you forget and don't worry about it. The color makes the biggest difference and if you don't like the larger ones, they do now make smaller ones as I mentioned in my previous response. A couple days ago I found both styles at a store called Rite Aid. You can also check the stores suggested by Victor for both sizes by Goody. I've seen the larger ones at all those stores.
A couple years ago I saw a guy who had his hair held in place with a baret (spelling?). Last weekend I was at a graphic design conference and there was a guy with a ponytail tie made up of a small round ball attached to an elastic expandable band. One day he wore one in red and the next day in orange. He works in the computer field as a web designer. For some reason it didn't look girly.
About four years ago I wore terry cloth type pony tail ties that were in bright colors. There were other guys wearing the same thing and it didn't seem at all girly at the time.
The most important difference in whether something looks girly is your own masculine image. If you have facial hair (beard or moustache) or you already look fairly masculine you can get away with a lot. If your look is not as masculine (no judgement intended) than you may not feel as comfortable with a scrunchie.
Once you take the chance and wear something new like that you soon forget about it and it becomes comfortable. But I understand your reluctance. I'm still the same way with something new. Just find what is comfortable for you and be yourself.
Good luck and if I see any other unusual examples I'll let you know.

Do scrunchies hold you hair as tightly as an elastic hair tie? They don't seem as tight, but I've never used one -- yet :-)
I'm working with a guy this week who has really bushy hair about to the middle of his back. He's using a dark blue scrunchie that's really pretty wide and big -- and he looks great! There he is in his suit and tie, and a big ol' scrunchie so it's really made me think about trying one myself. I'm from California (SF) and see a few scrunchies, and this week I'm in Washington DC.
