I was active on this site a long time ago, but haven't been for while.
I wonder if anybody remembers me..
Anyways, here's the problem:
I have very long, straight blonde hair, of medium thickness. (just
past my waist) Recently I have taken up swing dancing a couple times
a week, which involves a lot of fast, bouncy movements, stops, and spins. I refuse to wear my hair down, because it is way too hot, and
it gets in my face. I tried wearing it up in a french braid, but when
I spun, the braid would fly out and hit my partner in the face. Last
week I tried a bun, but it didn't stay in for very long (I need it for about 3 hours).
My question:
Can anybody think of a good way to put my hair up so that it is off my neck, out of both my and my partner's face, and is also stable and
secure enough to stay put for 3 hours of rough wear? I am a very
capable hairstylist and can do anything I want on myself, but I've run
out of ideas.
Thanks for any suggestions,
barbara
Have you tried like a French Roll?
Roll your hair in a bun and use a big fabric covered elastic to hold it. If the elastic is big enough to make two turns around the bun, it will hold for as long as you need.
Hmmmm....How about doing two pigtails and crossing each over your head, securing with bobby pins and tucking the ends under to hide them. You know, kinda like Heidi.
Okay Barbara,
I'm taking you at your word about your being able to style anything! :)
I have hair your length and have taken Aikido, a marshal art. Same problem. Two hairstyles worked for me.
The first is barely adequate, but probably very cute for swing dancing: Make two braids, like pocohontas, and then coil them up and around starting the bun by pulling the braid under and behind itself, neatness counts,:) and use the long hair pins to fix them in position. Everyone will think of Princess leia, but it's becoming an 'in' style with teens and young adults these days. Start the two braids a little higher on your head so that the buns are higher and it will look more chic.
The second wouldn't be jarred by rolling down a mountain: Make an off-center part on the right (either side will work, but I'm right handed and somehow this works better for me) You will make a french braid around your head, think of one inch behind the crown as the middle. Start the braid toward the left and keep adding in hair all the way around, the fingering gets tricky when you have to move your hands from the left side to the right, so be careful. If you position the french braid closer to the perimeter the look is more german peasant. If done as close to the crown as possible it is more... ballet instructor. Looks like a crown then. After finishing the french braided section finish off the rest in a regular braid which you will then coil along the inside of the french braid and pin into position. This is Very secure and actually doesn't take many pins. 4-5 is usual for me. I like to poke a few tiny flowers into the finished braided crown strategically, this looks sweet in the right setting. (not a business meeting) :)
Practice both several ways til you find what you feel is most flattering for you.
Good luck and I hope I've helped some,
Jennifer
It's great to find another long haired person who's into this martial art. I have waist length hair and i wear the dreaded Hakama...I think you know what this is..it's the black skirt wont by the senseis. However, i dont keep my hair tied since a lot of the students get tempted by pulling it...so i applied a wrist lock on them. Just thought I'd share it.
Well, I haven't found anything I can't do, yet. :) (except I'm a
little rusty on French twists)
I tried this when I went to a dance lesson Wednesday and it worked
really well! I don't do crown braids much (I invented a much nicer
alternative that doesn't involve upbraiding), so I ended up getting
a little tangled and slightly loose on the right side, but after I
finished and pinned it up, it stayed very secure the whole night,
and it was quite comfortable. I also got several compliments on
it. :) I think I will use this in the future for dancing.
Thanks very much for your help!
