Hi guys, I'm new to this site, and I think it's a fantastic resource. I've been growing my hair long since early July-I had a haircut scheduled, did some thinking, cancelled my haircut appointment, and haven't looked back! No trims so far either, I don't really feel like it, plus that 4-part hair treatise recommends against them I believe
Anyway, I'm wondering how long your hair was in the front (since this is where I usually measure mine) until you were able to tie it up, with a decent looking pony-tail, not just a mini-pony-tail with only a tiny bit of hair. i.e. 2 inches past the chin, something like that?
After growing it since July from a length of about 1 inch on top, my hair in the front is basically JUST above my lip, I can put my tongue on the very last part of it with a little bit of effort, which begs the question of why am I trying to do that, but regardless.
Thanks!!
I would say it varies for different people. Myself im appraoching 2 years and I rarely tie my hair back if it isnt wet as parts from the front still slip out.
Once your hair gets to the point where it can be put into a ponytail without effort (i.e. without stretching the hair out of your scalp!) is a good time to put it up in my opinion.
In my case it took about a year and 4 months to get to this point; but i found that the longer I grew my hair the better my ponytail felt and loooked.
Now after 3 years its all gone (excuse me while I cry...)
My front hair (bangs) would not stay in a ponytail until it was below my chin and even then it would fall out if I moved around too much. I was wearing a ponytail long before all my hair would reach. I used bobby pins to hold my bangs in place and learned to accept the fact that hair does fall out of the ponytail. In my opinion a ponytail is 'decent looking' when it looks good to you.
If you measure with a tape you will find it is about 13 inches from your forehead hairline to the base of your head in the back. To get ALL that hair into a low ponytail you need bangs that are at least 14 inches long to make it through the tie with some room to spare. That would be about 6 inches past your chin. At 2 inches past your chin MOST of your hair should reach and would be a good time to start with a ponytail. When most of your hair reaches your pony tie it will cling to the shorter hair to some degree keeping it in place reasonably well. Absalom
Obviously this is dependent on the size and shape of your head, but I've been able to wear my hair in a high half tail (without it falling loose) since my bangs reached my mouth. As its now past my mouth I can now tie the tail an inches or lower.
I think for most people 1-2 inches below your chin should be enough length to reach a full tail tied pretty low.
Dont feel weird about reaching your tongue up to touch your bangs, I've got a daft habit of sucking the tips of my hair if my bangs fall around my mouth - I dunno why I do that either!
