Hello all,
I've heard that it's bad for your hair to sleep with any accessories, like hair ties, in your hair. Is this true? I've been sleeping with my hair down but was wondering if it would be harmful to try sleeping with my hair in a tail using a scrunchi (sp?).
When my hair was straightened about a week ago, I slept with it in a ponytail to help keep it straight, and woke up with the worst headache of my life. If you do it in a ponytail, I'd suggest a LOOSE one. . . .
I have been sleeping with a ponytail for over a year now.
And not only do I have NO damage at all (no breakage, etc.) but
my hair actually looks BETTER when I wake up.
Actually, the tie slowly loosens itself while I am sleeping...tossing & turning, I suppose.
By morning, my hair has to be retied.
I have no permanent kinks because since the hair grows out at
the rate of 1/2 inch per month, the position
of the tie will keep changing over time.
I've had similar experiences when sleeping with hair ties in the past (when my hair was to my lower back, not there yet this time).
It definately eliminated tangles in the morning, never had any problems with kinks over period of several years. I'll definately resume this when I can get most of it in a tail again.
It would hurt your hair if your hair is wet because the cuticle is open when hair is wet.
Also rubber band would remove hair from your head.
Following Absalom's advice a couple of months ago, I sleep with my hair in a series of bands down its whole length. It definitely seems to keep it smoother.
I remember Sherri (I think) mentioning months ago that sleeping on a satin or silk pillow can improve hair texture. Not done that yet though.
I've slept with my hair in a loose braid for about a year now. I've never had any problems with it and I almost never have any tangles to brush out when I wake up in the morning.

First, thanks for all your responses.
My follow up: Are there certain hair ties you'd recommend over others? i.e. Are scrunchis safer on your hair then the metalless elastics, etc.
BTW, it was interesting to read that some of you experienced less tangles the next morning from wearing something at night.
Currently I am using some black (no metal) 'Goody Ouchless' bands for
both sleeping and for during the day.
No breakage, no damage. The bands appear to be about 1.5 inches
in diameter when new, but stretched out within a d ay or so.
General rules of thumb:
The more the device causes a sharp angle in the hair, the more damage it does.
The more texture there is pressed firmly agains the hair, the more damage it does.
Using these rules as a guide, you can pick the best items quite consistently.
Soft cloth hair ties do not cause damage to your hair and in fact will protect it. Absalom
my hair is like that of Abolsom and i make a loose braid when i sleep and sometimes loose ( after night shower)
For me, hair accessories are a godsend and I would not have been able reach almost knee length without them. I wear multiple soft cloth hair bands spaced at about 4 inch intervals along its entire length. I keep these on my hair almost all the time and I sleep with them on as well. This works as well as braiding but is much simpler to do. As long as the hair bands are not too tight they have proven beneficial to my hair. Absalom
