Picture Purged
Hi there. I have been giving this some thought for a while now, but as i might have mentioned in past posts the hair at the back of my neck flips up at the back, and is rather annoying. I was just wondering (because the back is getting quite long now) if I shoud trim the back back 1/2" to an inch long so that i can allow the top, side, and top-back layers to grow out long. I have included a picture so you know what i mean, as i feel it's quite a good example with that back at the neck being considerably shorter than the rest of the hair meaning its alot thicker and only flicks off a small amount (which i don't mind at all). So what i'm really asking for is advise on whether i should continue to grow (with the hair at the bottom of the back being not very thick and flicking/curling quite alot) and only cut when the other layers reach the lenght i am looking for...OR Cut the back now a slight bit (above the flick) letting them grow back thicker and less prone to curling and letting the other layers grow even more at the same time.
Note: Hair mainy 4 - 5 inches long top and side layers and about 4 - 4-1/2 at the back.
Thanks :)
Hey Wilson: My advice is to see a professional hairstylist's opinion and ask him/her to look at how the hair on the lower part of your neck is growing. It may just be a styling issue or it may be a cutting issue. I wouldn't just "CUT" it without a pros opinion. Let me know what you come up with and decide to do. ...John

Dude, you have great looking hair. If you can handle it, let it grow. It's going to do weird things at that length (mine's exactly the same length as yours; seeing your picture made me think someone took a pic of me!) And mine is doing about the same thing. It just needs a little more length, weight, to pull it out. Josh
Sorry, I may have made my post a little misleading. The picture is not of me, but of a style I am hoping to acheive when i grow out:p Anyway, thanks for the comments everyone, I have decided just to let my hair grow out until i have the length i want, and perhaps get it style then
Hi
Please.......DON'T cut the back hair. (When regrown it will "flip" again.) Just let it grow and eventually gravity should do a good job of taking care of those flips. This is just the beginning of the "Awkward Stage," and as such, one has to put-up with many things for at least a year and a half. But if you want long hair, this is the only way to achieve your goal. Please remember.........this is only temporary until the hair grows-out. If possible, just try and make the best of it as it will continue to change until you become an "Official" Longhair. Good Luck and let it grow.....................!!!!!
If the "flip" is annoying, have it trimmed. BUT, take a ruler to the hair stylist, and POINT OUT where a half an inch is. AND WATCH during every snip to be sure that is all that is taken off.
If it's even a ****hair more, don't pay.
I posted recently about the same topic, I had a really good answer from a Former Stylist called Theron (who has since left the board.) Anyway his advise was first rate.
Here's my thread

The message is clear - if you want to avoid the flips then you have the following options:
One: Get as much length as possible - the weight will prevent the flips. (This is the way that takes most patience.)
Two: Cut out all your layers, when there is more hair falling to the same length it will behave better and be less likely to flip.
Three: Grow/Trim every 3 months get a little more taken off the back gradually removing you layers and with them the flips.
Hope that helps
