Hey fellow long haired guys i.e. the interesting ones.
I've been growing my hair for about, oh, six months now and the longest strand is just below my shoulders. I did get a lot of stick about it at the start, but by ignoring the fools it has dramatically reduced. Anyway, back to the point. The hair at the back of my head gets very messy during the day, as I have to wear a shirt with a colar (still at high school). My mum has suggested that I get it trimmed as it looks untidy, but I keep telling her that its only going through a messy phase.
One thing she told me worried me though and I want to know if its true or false. If you don't trim your hair every so often, does it seriously become thinner, causing you to lose it quicker when you're older? Stupid question I know, but its making me annoyed, plus I know if I go to the hairdresser they'll take more off than I want.
Sorry for bothering you guys, but any reply would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
1.) You are correct.........you are in the so-called "Awkward Stage." A trim will only make this phase last longer and the "untidy look" will be around much longer to haunt you.
2.) FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps: (Wearing a shirt w/collar is tough. Can't you wear any type of pullover type shirts in your school? A collar is VERY disruptive.........especially at the stage you are now in.)
Everyone seems very set against trimming here, but I offer one thing in response to that. When you first start your hair growth, the way your hair falls from the lengths that they start at from a short cut can be very unattractive. I reccommend that you get one major trim before your hair reaches shoulder length - it makes sure that everything is even and neat. Now, I happen to be in the awkward stage myself (that means lots and lots of pony tails for me), but I'm VERY glad I listened to my female friends and had my hair trimmed at the beginning. However, if it not uneven and just messy, then these fine people are correct in advising you not to trim your hair and just stick it out until it goes past your shoulders.
I agree, trimming is not all bad if done responsibly, but you have to have a clear idea and good advice about what's right for you before you do it.

You've only been growing it for 6 months and already it's shoulder level, how can this be possible? How long was your hair when you started to grow it? As for the question, I cant say much I'm sorry, as I'm nearly 5 months into the growing stage. I shouldn't think that you'd go bald quicker if you dont chop once in a while. There are a few people on this board who grew their hair out without any cuts for at least a year, and their doing fine. What your mum's probably talking about is split ends, because if you dont cut them, they may travel up the hair strand and break off the strand, giving the thinning effect. Some guys recommend trimming once every 3 months, I would slightly trim at least every 6 months or more or even a year, a year at best, and keep an eye out for slpit ends, although their not really a big problem as they eventually break off. Be careful with your hair, and you shouldnt get many split ends.
Without trims the "messy phase" can last for several years. Trimming is the subject of some disagreement here. But what I've found is that largely it depends on your hair type.
Those will curly hair can get away with less frequent trims as their hair type hides imperfections very well (except in the early stages), as can those with very straight hair. Those of us with Wavey hair will struggle more.
Bottom line the more length you have the better behaved your hair will be thanks to the extra weight the length provides. However the more layers in your hair the less likely your hair is to behave - you can only remove the layers by trimming it all one length. So its a complete trade off.
This is complete clap-trap, though without trims you can develop split ends and you hair can become damaged, this can make the ends seem thinner, but not the scalp. That said if you take good care of your hair, split ends won't develop that quickly, most people can easily go 6-12 months without problems.
