I know this question comes up in one form or another all the time but I'd just like to get peoples opinions here.
I'm growing my hair back out from a layered style and right now my shortest layer is about 12" but springs up to mid neck, the longest hair is about 15", or 3" past shoulders, it doesn't spring up so much because of weight. However the ends -everything from the last half inch of the shortestlayer downward - tend to look ragged, (not split) but just very uneven and eventually I want to get the layers evened out.
So, should I wait until my shortest layer is about mid back and then have all of the layered ends chopped off at once OR should I have gradual trims every six months or so ? With option one I'll have to walk around with shredded ends for another year or more, with option two there'll be less weight to keep it down until it gets really long. Aaahh, problems! lol
I know what your going through. I'm not as far on as you but I have a similiar dilema. My Lower layers at the back reach about an inch and a half past my shoulders yet my longer top layers still only reach to my collar. The 3 inch difference causes the hair at the back to flip out and curl and generally look a mess too.
I'm toying with the idea of trimming up the back, (probably 1/2-2 inches) to reduce the layering. Well I know I'm going to do it, the question is when? Now, or when its longer?
To be honest, I'd say you should start trimming now. You have a good amount of length and the fewer layers you have, the less likely your hair will be to kick up.
Please keep us posted on your decision.
Well, everything basically everyone has said here is do NOT trim your hair at the awkward stage. I am nearing then end of that partiuclar nightmare (thank GOD), and I'm glad I didn't cut my hair. Only trim it if it is wildly uneven, not just messy. It will straighten out again once it has enough weight and length to stop being tossed about by your shoulders.
... have the trims but will wait another 2-3 months because I've noticed that my hair is just at the point where it's beginning to seperate as it falls about the shoulders so I'll wait until it's a bit longer.
