Well, after 19 months in, here's my situation: I am loving my hair, it's finally long enough for the ponytail, it doesn't really look like a 'fro anymore, and it is just generally behaving (for the most part anyways).
Now, since I've started growing my hair out, I've strongly considered the option of dreadlocks. I've read up a great deal, and actually put in some dreads for a friend of mine (and helped with a second person) and know how to do them correctly, keep them from getting dirty and smelly etc. . . .
Now my question is: what do you all think? I've had like 3 of my friends say "Go for it!" with most others either indifferent or against it.
Just wondering what you guys thought (and yes, I know that in the end it is my decision, I just want some opinions)
As always,
That "Ball" Guy
I like dreadlocks a lot and would even like to have them myself (work kinda gets in the way), but I wonder whether you shouldn't wait a bit longer. You've got great hair and have waited a long time for it to be long. Perhaps, you should live with it a little longer before making a big commitment like dreads...?
On the other hand, you've got the hair for great dreads and IMHO they would look great on you. If you feel the calling toward them and it seems right, you should respond to it.
Not sure that's helpful
cheers, Pete
I personally like your hair the way it is. I don't care for dreads. They can't be good for your hair.
Sure sounds like you have been doing your homework so to speak. Your hair looks GREAT as it is now, and in my opinion Dreads would look great also. I have seen some guys with terrific Dreadlocks, (most likely done professionaly) and some with terrible ones (done at home and terrible). If you are going to "go for it," you might as well have it done "high-class" by a professional.
For now however I have a suggestion: wait at least a month before doing anything. Your decision will by then be very concrete and help to avoid later on regrets.
Good luck in what ever you decide.
Well, I've just about set in my mind that I want to wait at least another year before locking up. I can *always* go and get dreadlocks, but I can't ever really go back (well, there is a way, soaking it in conditioner within a few days of being put it, but it takes a ton of hair with it)
Your act sounds very much together. Congrats! I think you are very lucky, for whichever path you take will look great. All the best-
Hey Ball Guy,
Also think your hair's looking damn good right now. Dreds can look really good too, but I've heard so many things about them, like you can't wash them and they smell and the hair mats... I'm just not sure how healthy it is for your hair.
I could be wrong, as I haven't done all the research, but do ask around (I'm sure you would anyway as it's a pretty big decision).
Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck!

I think the dreads would work on you, and your hair looks awesome right now. Dread are one of those things where, I think they look great, but once you do it, you're really locked into it. If you're sure you want that, go for it!
you say that you are loving your hair-- well consider once the dreads are in and you decide that you don't like them there's only one way to remove them.
personally i wouldn't for that very reason.
There used to be a site that explained how to detangle dreadlocks. The last time I looked for it I couldnt' find it, but it's possible it's still out there somewhere.
i had dreadlocks, and within 12 hours of creating them i decided that it was not the right time, so i spent 2 hours in the shower and a whole bottle of conditioner getting them out. detangling wasn't actually toooo hard, just very time consuming, so if you do decided you don't want them it is possible to reverse the process so that you don't have to cut them off. however i'd guess that detangling curly hair such as yours would be more difficult than it was for me with my relatively straight hair
but on whether or not its a good idea, i say give it a week or so for some more thought, then go for it if you're still sure
i too aim to have dreadlocks someday fairly soon, but it just all went a bit wrong for me on the first attempt thats all
I'm always amazed by the misconception of people and dreadlocks. I have to say that it is a very cool hairstyle if it is taken care of and well maintained. It's not about being unclean and dirty. There are tons of sites that are great resources for taking care of dreads. Yes, you do have to keep them clean and bug free.
You having curly hair will make for better "locking" ability and your hair will grow out into really nice dreads. Ok, why am I going on and on....Sorry. The decision is yours and you only live once, so do what you heart desires.
peace,
ck
