Trimming your hair doesn't make it grow faster (unfortunately!), but it will keep damaged hair from splitting up higher.
In my opinion, trimming depends on how you want your hair to look as it grows out. Do you want the one-length look? Do you want a mullet look? Just realize, though, that the longer it gets, the more manageable it will be due to the weight of your hair. The first time I grew my hair out to one-length, I trimmed my back up until the sides & front were almost equal before leaving the back alone. This time, I grew until a bit of a mullet (since I started almost from a buzz cut too) and then trimmed up the back.
So the bottom line is, get a trim if either 1) you want to, or 2) your hair is damaged.
Good luck!
I believe this question is also answered in Hair Religion's RAQ, but I don't have the link for it...
Hi Dave:
Getting trims does not make your hair grow faster. Therefore, keep in mind that any trim means it will set you back in your process, making it that much longer until your hair reaches the length you want. Only get trims if it's absolutely, positively necessary (i.e. to keep your hair from looking too much like a mullet, which is the only reason I've had two maintenance trims since I began growing in Nov. 2002). Also, follow the Two-Week Rule: wait two weeks before doing anything to your hair, including trims, highlights, etc. This will give you lots of time to think if you really want it done.
Good luck!
Jeremy
Yes, I think this question is answered in the FAQ/RAQ... whatever its called - it says it's not true that cutting your hair helps it grow (we're not crabs, starfish or squids, afterall.
If you want to neaten it up... probably best off doing it yourself, as I do, or getting your mammy to do it.
I just know from experience, as many of us have learned, cutting your hair when it's growing is a painful setback if you have a goal length for it, so I'd second... or third or fourth.... the 'no' opinion. But as ever, it's up to you... you wanna cut it, then cut it. Won't kill ya :)
Good luck.
