Ive been growing my hair for about 6 months and its about 5 1/2 inches but its curly and unless I blow dry it when I wake up its a curly mess. If im out in the rain my hair would be ruined- What do you think would be better for this gel or mousse.
I'd just stick with blow drying. Gels and stuff and other products with alcohol in it will quickly dry your hair out and damage it. As for the rain, guess you have to plan your day better.

I say, bring a hat with you wherever you go, and if it begins to rain, put it on.
I've been using an alcohol free gel for maximum control when I go to work, gotta keep some sort of professionalism goin. Other times, I've been using a heavy dose of Infusium leave in conditioner. It leaves it looking wet for a while, but definately tame without being stiff or sticky. Then there's times I just let it go all over, I figure if people see it looking that crappy, they'll appreciate it better when I finally get through the awkward stage.
I use a texture cream from American Crew...still. My hair is about 10 inches (17 months) and very thick, curly like yours. There are lots of creams out there. I like them better than gels. Gel is too hard and sticky. Good luck!
I use brylcreem gel, which seems to take pretty good care of my hair - the condition has been constantly improving since I stopped using the creative clay by... wella I think.
Also using hair end definition by wella cos it means I don't get the 'mushroom' or 'bowl cut' look - gives my tips a nice spikey and defined (quel surprise) look.
I'd just advise using something with as few chemicals, especially alcoholic ingredients which dry your hair. I stand by my conviction that coconut oil is fantastic - gives you the natural oil look (as long as you don't use too much... that's the oil-from-a-chip-pan look), and it gives your hair more natural weight and control.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice guys!
two things got me through it: hats and NONalcoholic gel.
