My hair dresser recommended using cut up pantyhose for hairties. Believe it or not they work great. They never pull my hair out. Where has this been all my life.
I use a shoestring - it keeps my hair tied without damaging it.

I hit on this idea about 3 weeks ago, though I may have read about it a long time ago, in a household advice type column. Anyway, it works very well for me. BTW, the longer section of stocking leg you use, the bulkier the resulting tie. The black ones can even look a bit "formal" with a dark business suit.
Best commercial hair-ties I've ever found avoid damaging my hair, look attractive and not "girly" and are sold under the
name "Smoothies." They come in a pack of four, soft, nice colors
(black, dark brown, dark green, or other colors with attractive patterns) and do not contain any metal parts!
I've seen others on this site recommend other nicely colored and
textured hair ties, too. However, most of them seem to have a
metal connection band, which has often caught my somewhat-fine hair and caused breakage and frizzies.
I found the Smoothies on sale at hair supply stores in the San Francisco area last time I was there (former resident). The package says they're made in Japan and distributed by a company called Intuition, 750 LaPlaya St #621, San Francisco CA 94121. 1-800-490-6527. The wrapper also says "New! Handmade-long-lasting-
no metal parts!"
I've been using the same ones for months without any wear out on them.
I also like them because they are narrow enough and flexible so I
can wear one as a "standby" on my wrist, and they look and work just fine as a wrist band as in my hair.
Thought you guys would be interested.
