Hi, I'm wondering what constitutes a good trim for you, as the topic says....specifically in the growing stage-mine happens to be a little bit past my lips in the front, as an example.
Do you want the hairdresser to just do stuff to the part at the back of your neck? Or should they do some cutting to the other areas?
Then again, I'm probably going to just let mine grow and not get a trim until December, when it's at a sufficiently long length to tie up...but I'm still wondering
Well I have not yet gotten a trim and am approacing two years. Im actually scared to let anyone go near my hair with a pair of shears. Anyways I would consider a good trim if I was to get one that is where whatever I asked the person cutting the hair today is what they did. For example if I asked for an inch to be taken off id expect an inch no more no less.
But what would you ask for? Just an inch in the back neck area to even things up? sorry, maybe i'm unclear, but partly because i have no idea what i'd ask for in terms of the hair other than at the very bottom? like would i ask to have split ends cut, etc.?
Well since I havnt had mine trimmed at all I cant give a very good answer im sure you will get a bunch of replys tommorow. In responce to split ends though if your hair is only at your mouth I dont think you need to be worried about them. If you were to geta trim I believe most people get the back trimmed to even out with the rest of there hair. Although I dont like the way that looks and decided to just grow my hair with no trims.
Getting the exact amount you wanted trimmed.
During the first year of deciding to grow my hair long, I had various hair cuts. After that year, i started to think about a plan, like how often to have trims etc, but before I had it thinned and trimmed (big layers). So I started to grow it out. Until a few months ago when I want for my regular 3 monthly 1cm trim my hair dresser told me I had an almost mullet like layer right at the back which was quite a lot longer than the rest, so I decided to get it all leveled off at about mid neck level. Now I plan on going back every half a year to get 1cm trimmed off the length. I want my hair to be about rip level, so this is the plan I'm going to follow for a good few years to come.

Preferably one at all but when necessary a stylist who understands what one quarter of an inch is and where the back, the front or the sides actually are.
Few opinions on my hair are also a requirement. I do the deciding.
A good trim is when you are totally pleased with the outcome and your confident in your stylist. Getting the ends trimmed should not have to be a nail biting experience.
A good trim is generally the result of complete understanding between the stylist and the person getting a trim. Naturally it also helps if the stylist has a good sense of what an inch or a centimetre happens to be.
Generally a good trim should involve cutting as little as possible but as much as necessary. When your growing out, the primary purpose of trims is to: a) remove split ends and b) remove layers.
Here's what I did during the first 12 months: Every 3 months I have 1/2 inch trimmed off the back n sides and I have the ends dusted (<1/4 inch) (except from the top) to keep the overall shape.
Though now my hair is longer I'm finding it easier to go longer between trims. I'm trying to hold off as long as possible now.
Hope that helps.
My hair is pretty much down to my elbows. I have my mom trim it (I'm only 18 and in high school; I live at home). She gets my hair wet and then trims it straight across the back, as even my bangs are level with the rest of my hair... A good trim constitutes about 1 centimeter, more or less.
Your hair is pretty damn sweet. You look like Peter Lindgren hes a guitarist for a band called opeth.
